Sunil Sharma: Sometimes, the right role finds you at the right moment
Actor Sunil Sharma found his breakthrough role as Shaukat in ‘Dhurandhar’ after an initial rejection, thanks to a changed look and persistence.

Actor Sunil Sharma, who plays Shaukat in Dhurandhar and its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, calls the project a turning point in his career—one that came through timing and persistence.“I believe everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, the right role finds you at the right moment, and Dhurandhar feels exactly like that,” he says.Sunil reveals that he initially wasn’t selected despite giving a look test. “At that time, I didn’t have much of a beard. After a month, the response wasn’t positive,” he shares. However, things changed unexpectedly. “Later, I met the casting director again, and by then my look had changed due to a South project. He liked it. I gave another look test, and that’s when I got the role.”

Learning that the film was directed by Aditya Dhar and featured actors like Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna made the opportunity even more special. Despite being part of a large ensemble, Sunil focused on authenticity. “I worked on body language, dialogue delivery, and subtle expressions to make Shaukat feel real. Rehearsals and discussions helped shape the character,” he explains. He also shares an important lesson from the director. “Aditya sir told me that dialogues aren’t always necessary. The way you act in a scene matters more. That stayed with me. From Akshaye Khanna, I learned the power of restraint. Silence and minimalism can be incredibly effective on screen. When I saw myself on screen, I felt very happy. It reassured me that patience and timing truly matter in this industry.”
