R Madhavan Champions Audience Criticism: “The Viewer is Your Master”
In a refreshing departure from industry narratives, veteran actor R Madhavan has unequivocally endorsed the right of movie audiences to express disappointment and even anger towards films. At a time when some sections of the film fraternity have vocalized discontent over what they perceive as increasingly harsh public reactions, Madhavan has adopted a distinctly humble stance, declaring the common moviegoer as his “master.”
Addressing the widely debated question of whether audiences have become overly “brutal” in their critiques, Madhavan astutely observed that viewers have always held opinions. However, he highlighted the transformative role of social media in amplifying these voices, providing a platform that magnifies collective sentiment in unprecedented ways.
Madhavan painted a relatable picture of a typical family outing to the cinema. He described scenarios where one family member might strongly advocate for watching a particular star’s film, only for the entire family to be left utterly disheartened if the cinematic experience falls short of expectations. This common experience, he suggests, is at the heart of audience frustration.
Delving deeper into the contemporary viewing environment, Madhavan acknowledged the myriad distractions that audiences face, even within the confines of a movie theatre. In an interview with M9, he articulated the viewer’s breaking point: “Despite all this distraction, just when you’re getting used to the film, if the film is irritating you, if the actor is pompous and the director has not done his job, or it’s just a great combination and an on-table profit, they are irritated. Earlier, I used to wait a week for reviews. Now, even before the film is released, they are so angry. They have passed judgment on the teaser or trailer. They are absolutely correct.” This statement underscores his belief that pre-release judgments, driven by teasers and trailers, are often valid indicators of audience perception.
For Madhavan, the act of spending money on a film ticket bestows upon the audience a profound position of power. He elaborated on this unique dynamic, noting that unlike many other professions, actors and filmmakers are subjected to a public judgment that can extend far beyond their professional lives, often impacting their families.
“His achievement in life is only that he can afford to buy a ticket to your movie. And therefore, he becomes your master. So, you have to salute what he says. This kind of discrimination doesn’t happen to a scientist, an industrialist, or anybody, because their circle of life is very small. If they get brickbats, it’s in private. Here, the family also bears the price of your stupidity. If my film doesn’t do well, my family will feel embarrassed to go around,” Madhavan explained. This poignant reflection highlights the personal cost of professional shortcomings in the highly visible world of entertainment, distinguishing it from other sectors where criticism might remain more contained.
Madhavan himself has maintained a prolific and diverse career across multiple languages in recent years.
