Bollywood Under Scrutiny: FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe Poised for Film Set Inspections Amid Food Safety Concerns

Tukaram Mundhe to inspect film sets next? FWICE seeks FDA action on food quality at shooting locations

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, widely recognized for his rigorous, unannounced inspections at dining establishments across the state, appears set to broaden his scope. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has formally appealed to the FDA, urging immediate inspections at Mumbai’s numerous film shooting locations. This comes amidst persistent and long-standing allegations regarding substandard food quality provided to thousands of film industry professionals.

FWICE Raises Health Concerns Over Food on Shooting Sets

As reported by News18 Showsha, FWICE has submitted a formal request for surprise raids targeting both shooting venues and their associated catering facilities throughout Mumbai. The federation highlighted that complaints concerning food quality on film sets have accumulated significantly over the years, culminating in what they describe as a substantial health and safety risk for crew members who routinely endure extended working hours.

Ashoke Dubey, General Secretary of FWICE, emphasized the urgency of the situation in his statement to the FDA: “Workers, technicians and artists spend long hours on shooting locations, and they deserve safe, hygienic and wholesome food at their workplace. This is a basic requirement, not a luxury.”

Dubey further articulated the federation’s stance, stating, “This is about the dignity and well-being of the people who keep the entertainment industry running. We hope the FDA will take cognisance of these complaints and conduct inspections so that production houses and catering agencies are held accountable.” This declaration underscores a growing demand for improved conditions within the entertainment sector.

FWICE Demands Checks at Film City and Beyond

The federation’s petition specifically calls for the FDA to conduct unannounced inspections at prominent locations such as Film City in Goregaon, alongside various other shooting sites in and around the Mumbai metropolitan area. FWICE seeks thorough examinations of kitchens, food preparation zones, storage facilities, and catering setups to ensure strict adherence to the standards mandated by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Moreover, FWICE has requested the collection of food samples from any location where meals appear unsafe, potentially adulterated, or otherwise unfit for human consumption. They are also advocating for decisive action against any producers, caterers, or agencies found in violation of these crucial norms. The federation has pledged its complete cooperation with the FDA to facilitate these proposed checks, signaling a unified effort to address the issue.

Understanding the ‘Mundhe Effect

The term “Mundhe Effect” has entered the lexicon to describe a significant paradigm shift in operational practices within the restaurant and hospitality industry, extending beyond the impact of individual raids. Under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s leadership, FDA protocol has evolved: licenses are now suspended immediately upon discovery of violations. This marks a departure from previous practices, which often afforded establishments a grace period to rectify issues discreetly before formal action was initiated.

Industry observers believe this procedural change has been genuinely transformative. Kitchens that historically neglected hygiene standards unless specifically flagged in a report are now compelled to view compliance as an ongoing, non-negotiable operational necessity. This heightened awareness stems from the understanding that there is no longer a buffer period to address problems without immediate and tangible consequences, fostering a culture of proactive adherence to food safety regulations.
