Indian Epic ‘Ramayana’ Set for Global Impact with November China Release, Titled ‘The Legend of the Prince’

MUMBAI, INDIA – [Date of Publication] – Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious cinematic adaptation of the ancient Indian epic, ‘Ramayana,’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, is poised for a significant global expansion with a simultaneous release in China this November. The highly anticipated film will be introduced to Chinese audiences under the evocative title, ‘Ramayana: The Legend of the Prince,’ signalling a strategic move to resonate with international viewers.

The announcement, reportedly made through the official Sony Pictures account on Weibo, has already generated considerable buzz among fan communities, with screenshots of the new title and plot summary circulating widely. Sony Pictures, handling the film’s international distribution, is leveraging director Nitesh Tiwari’s proven track record in the Chinese market, prominently associating ‘Ramayana’ with his previous monumental success, ‘Dangal.’

Tiwari’s ‘Dangal’ Legacy Paves the Way

Tiwari’s 2016 wrestling drama, ‘Dangal,’ starring Aamir Khan, achieved unprecedented success in China following its release in May 2017. The film, which originally debuted in India in December 2016, went on to gross an astounding approximate of Rs 1,200-1,300 crore in China, equivalent to over USD 190 million or around Yen 1.3 billion. This phenomenal performance established a strong precedent for Indian cinema with compelling narratives to captivate Chinese audiences. The strategic emphasis on Tiwari’s directorial prowess for ‘Ramayana’ aims to replicate and potentially surpass this past triumph.

Following a Trail of Global Success

The release of ‘Ramayana: The Legend of the Prince’ in China also follows the recent global box office success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ another major Sony Pictures distribution. The Tom Holland-starrer demonstrated significant pull in mainland China, accumulating approximately USD 185.4 million to USD 186.7 million through the weekend of August 7–9, 2026. The film maintained its number-one position at the Chinese box office in its second weekend, adding USD 28.9 million to USD 29.1 million to its impressive USD 121.3 million five-day opening. This positive market trend bodes well for ‘Ramayana’ as it enters a receptive cinematic landscape.
