A tragic incident at a state-run hydropower project in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand has resulted in the deaths of at least seven construction workers and left thirteen others injured. The catastrophe unfolded late on Thursday when a sudden landslide caused water and debris to surge into the tunnel, trapping numerous individuals inside.
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has described the ongoing efforts as a “war-like rescue operation,” emphasizing the paramount importance of safely evacuating all remaining trapped workers. As of the latest reports from India’s State Disaster Management Authority, three workers are still unaccounted for. Visuals released by local authorities illustrate the perilous conditions faced by rescue teams, who, equipped with headlamps, are utilizing makeshift rafts to navigate the flooded sections of the tunnel. Amrit Lal Meena, commander of the National Disaster Response Force, highlighted the challenges, noting the significant and increasing water levels within the tunnel since operations began.
This devastating event occurs against a backdrop of severe weather, with Uttarakhand experiencing intense monsoon rains in recent days. Such incidents are unfortunately not uncommon on large construction sites across India. However, environmental experts are increasingly pointing to the role of excessive development projects, particularly in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan regions, as a contributing factor to the rising frequency of these disasters.
The recent past has seen similar tragedies. Just last month, twenty individuals perished in a tunnel collapse at another state-run hydroelectric project in the remote northeastern state of Sikkim. In a notable incident in 2023, forty-one workers were successfully rescued after being trapped for seventeen days inside a collapsed tunnel, also in Uttarakhand.
The annual monsoon season, which typically commences in June, has already claimed hundreds of lives across the country through floods and landslides. Experts caution that the confluence of climate change and inadequately planned development is exacerbating the frequency, intensity, and overall impact of these natural and man-made catastrophes.
