'We are in touch with them': Shubman Gill on Sai Sudharsan, Jasprit Bumrah's absence ahead of Galle Test

Indian cricket captain, Shubman Gill, has confirmed his fitness and readiness to lead the national side in the opening Test match against Sri Lanka, which is set to commence in Galle on August 15th. However, the Indian team faces significant challenges with key players Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan both ruled out of the two-Test series due to injuries, casting a shadow over their preparations.

Bumrah, a crucial component of India’s bowling attack, was initially part of the squad but was subsequently withdrawn owing to a knee injury. Similarly, young batting talent Sai Sudharsan has been sidelined with a persistent toe niggle, failing to achieve the expected recovery timeline. Addressing the media at the pre-match press conference, Gill assured that the team management is maintaining continuous communication with the injured duo, closely monitoring their rehabilitation progress. “Yes, we are in touch with them. There is constant monitoring on players and where they are (in terms of fitness),” Gill stated, emphasizing the team’s commitment to their players’ well-being.

Gill elaborated on Sudharsan’s unfortunate situation, expressing disappointment at his absence. “Sai’s case was quite unfortunate. It looked like he would be able to be a part of the series. But we did constant scans and he wasn’t improving as much as we would have liked or expected him to be,” he explained. The captain further clarified that the decision to rest Sudharsan was made after careful consideration, prioritizing his long-term fitness, especially given the demanding nature of Test cricket. “So, sometimes you have to take a call from the player’s point of view as to whether you want to take that risk,” Gill added, underscoring the player-centric approach adopted by the team.

The rigorous five-day format of Test matches played a significant role in the decision to exclude the injured players. Gill highlighted that unlike shorter formats like One-Day Internationals or T20s, Test cricket demands sustained physical exertion, making it unwise to risk players who are not fully fit. “The Test match is for 5 days. If it’s one-day or T20, then it’s a different story. But in the Test match, you don’t want to take a risk,” he articulated. He further reasoned that Test cricket offers more opportunities for players to regain form even if they start poorly, making it even more imperative to have fully fit individuals. “I feel that in the Test match, you have more opportunities with other players to come back. For example, if you don’t play well on the first day, you get another chance. So, the players have more chances to come back. So, keeping that in mind, we were a little disappointed with Sai and Bumrah,” Shubman concluded.

Despite these significant setbacks, Gill remained optimistic about the team’s prospects, emphasizing that the morale of the squad remains high. He expressed strong confidence in the depth of the Indian bench strength, asserting that any player given an opportunity would be capable of performing at a high level and contributing to a victory. “But it didn’t affect the morale of the team that much that they didn’t get the first 11. I feel that whoever is in our 15 or whoever we give a chance in our playing 11 in any condition, they can play well and win the game,” Gill affirmed, showcasing his belief in the collective strength of the team. The first Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15th at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, followed by the second Test from August 23rd to 27th at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
