And we have got about nine Tests and I think we have to win around six or seven to be able to have a good chance at qualifying. So in terms of that, I think it’s a very important series for us.”

In contrast, the current Sri Lanka tour has provided a welcome change, with the team having been in Colombo since August 4th. The captain emphasized the importance of adequate preparation time, lamenting past instances where tight schedules hindered player adaptation. “If we do have an opportunity and if the scheduling allows us to have at least a week or 10 days before the Test match starts, it obviously helps with the preparation,” Gill explained. He recalled a particularly hectic period last year, involving continuous travel and matches in England, the Asia Cup, home Tests, and a tour to Australia, followed by another Test match within four days of returning. Such a compressed schedule makes it difficult for players to adjust, especially those with less extensive experience. Therefore, the additional preparation time in Sri Lanka is proving invaluable.
The squad’s commitment to thorough preparation is palpable, with optional net sessions remaining active even on the eve of the match. Players like Gill himself, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja, Gurnoor Brar, and Manav Suthar were seen honing their skills, applying final touches in the hot and humid conditions. Despite facing some injury concerns, the 15-member squad, meticulously assembled by the senior selection committee, boasts significant talent.
Chairman Ajit Agarkar’s presence in Galle, engaging in extensive discussions with the coach and captain, underscores the gravity of this series. India, a team that has often relied on all-rounders to bolster its lineup, might deviate from this strategy in the first Test, potentially fielding more specialist players. Gill all but confirmed Suthar’s inclusion in the playing XI, highlighting his dual capabilities. “He’s got the ability with the bat. We know he can bat, obviously. Of course, you need a bit of experience, you need some belief and confidence. And that will only come once you’re out there, you’re playing, you score some runs. And hopefully he does that in the series. He’s someone with great skill in bowling. And he’s got the potential to be able to be a really good number 8 batsman as well,” Gill stated.
Both Gill and Gautam Gambhir recognize the immense value of meaningful contributions from the lower order, believing it can significantly influence momentum and frustrate the opposition. This strategic consideration explains why Kuldeep Yadav often found himself benched, both in the five Tests in England and frequently in limited-overs fixtures. We have seen how good Gurnoor is with the old ball when nothing else is happening. You need that bit of extra pace and extra bounce. He’s obviously very tall as well. But I think Prasidh recently has been bowling the best that I have ever seen him bowl. In red ball and also in white ball. So it would be a very tough decision for us to pick just one.”
