During a recent visit to Stourbridge, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, expressed profound admiration for the community’s resilience in the face of adversity. Addressing a gathering crowd on Greyhound Lane, Burnham, accompanied by West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, acknowledged the “traumatic” events that had recently impacted residents. “Bit traumatic for the community, eh,” he remarked as he approached the assembled individuals, adding, “Terrible thing isn’t it when you see it.”
Burnham was keen to highlight the palpable sense of unity he had observed since his arrival. “You’re a strong community, aren’t you? I have picked that up since I have been here. It reminds you how good people are, doesn’t it,” he shared. He recounted a poignant encounter with a family whose home had been completely devastated, leaving “not a thing left.”
Explaining his personal decision to visit Stourbridge, Burnham drew a parallel to his own experiences as Mayor of Greater Manchester, having dealt with similar large-scale incidents. “This good man here (Richard Parker), I was in a similar position as Mayor of Greater Manchester with fires, so I changed my plans to come down here,” he stated. He confessed to being struck by the sheer scale of the devastation, likening the scenes to images he had previously only associated with places like California, noting, “I haven’t seen anything like that in Britain before.”
Burnham extended his gratitude to the invaluable efforts of the firefighters, police, and ambulance services operating within the West Midlands. He revealed that emergency funding and military support had initially been committed for the area, though ultimately, these resources were redirected to South Wales. He also singled out the local council for praise, affirming that they had “stood up” to the challenge and that their coordination with emergency services had resulted in an “amazing operation.”
The Mayor also touched upon the overwhelming generosity of the public, with donations “pouring in” to support those affected. Reflecting on the positive human response, he contrasted it with the often-negative narratives found online. “You go online, and you think what’s happened to the world? Why is everyone so awful to each other? But they are not in the real world, people are great,” he mused. He concluded by emphasizing the inherent kindness and mutual support within the community, stating, “And I know your part of the world, it’s got a real big heart, and people are there for each other.”
Burnham further confirmed that he had personally engaged with the Treasury Minister, urging for prompt and efficient handling of insurance claims, proclaiming there should be “no messing about here” for affected residents. The visit underscored the importance of community spirit and coordinated emergency response in times of crisis, providing a reassuring presence and a clear message of support for the people of Stourbridge.
