Arsenal: Record-breaking transfer collapses as star says no

A significant transfer saga involving Arsenal and one of their star players has reached a critical juncture, with a potential club-record sale now reportedly off the table. While this specific deal has collapsed, the Gunners are still actively pursuing multiple high-profile acquisitions to bolster their squad before the summer transfer window concludes.

The London club has outlined an ambitious plan to conclude the transfer period with at least three key additions. Their priorities include securing a new center-back who also possesses the versatility to operate effectively as a right-back. Ezri Konsa has emerged as the primary target for this role, with Jarell Quansah and Jules Kounde also being considered as viable alternatives. Beyond defensive reinforcements, Arsenal is also keen to recruit a top-tier left winger and a prolific striker. In their search for a formidable forward, the club has reportedly initiated discussions regarding Victor Osimhen, currently of Galatasaray.

Interestingly, Osimhen’s name first surfaced in transfer talks that initially centered around the potential departure of Gabriel Martinelli from the Emirates Stadium. It was understood that Arsenal was open to offloading the Brazilian international, with the intention of bringing in an upgraded option for the left flank. In a surprising development, Turkish Super Lig champions Galatasaray had submitted an official bid for the 25-year-old winger, valued at a substantial €45 million, or approximately £38.5 million. Had this transfer materialized at the proposed price, Martinelli would have become Arsenal’s most expensive ever sale, eclipsing the £35 million Liverpool paid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back in 2017.

However, a flurry of reports from highly reputable journalists has now unequivocally confirmed that Martinelli has communicated his clear unwillingness to move to Turkey and join Galatasaray. This rejection effectively scuttles what would have been a record-breaking departure for Arsenal. Despite this setback, the possibility of Martinelli leaving the club in the coming weeks remains, should a more appealing opportunity arise.

Leading the charge with this breaking news was David Ornstein, who reported that “Gabriel Martinelli camp inform Arsenal winger has no interest in joining Galatasaray. #AFC received €45m bid from Turkish club & open to trading if suitable offers arrive but #Galatasaray not on agenda for 25yo Brazil international.” This sentiment was echoed by renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who stated, “Gabriel Martinelli never considered a move to Turkey at this stage of his career as realistic option. Nothing expected to happen in the upcoming weeks with Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray as @David_Ornstein reports.”

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, who was instrumental in initially revealing Galatasaray’s €45 million bid on August 12, further corroborated these reports. He confirmed, “The €45m offer from Galatasaray to Arsenal now confirmed. However, Gabriel Martinelli’s camp have informed Arsenal that he has rejected joining Galatasaray. As reported, there was also no agreement between Martinelli/Gala.” In a subsequent update, Plettenberg revealed that following Martinelli’s rejection, Galatasaray has now reportedly shifted their focus to securing the services of AC Milan’s Rafael Leao. This significant transfer news will undoubtedly impact Arsenal’s ongoing efforts to reshape their squad for the upcoming season.
