Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur recently paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary actress Sridevi on what would have been her 63rd birthday. He fondly recalled their collaborative experience during the production of the iconic 1987 science-fiction superhero film, ‘Mr. India’. Kapur shared a poignant black-and-white photograph of himself and Sridevi from their time working together, noting that while her face remained timeless, the intensity in her eyes, first seen in ‘Joshilay’, became even more pronounced in ‘Mr. India’. He emphasized that while the world celebrated Sridevi as a star, he remembered her primarily as a director’s invaluable ally.
Kapur articulated that ‘Mr. India’ would have been an impossible feat without the extraordinary synergy between him and Sridevi. He described the palpable excitement and anticipation he felt each morning, eager to arrive on set, knowing that Sridevi consistently brought an element of delightful unpredictability to her performances. This ability to surprise, he explained, was a hallmark of her genius and never failed to materialize.
Beyond her captivating on-screen persona, Kapur highlighted Sridevi’s remarkable humility off-camera. Despite her immense fame, she would quietly occupy her chair between takes, eschewing the typical star treatment of retreating to a private trailer – a stark contrast, he observed, to many contemporary actors.
