Analysts suggest that since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, North Korea has emerged as a crucial strategic partner for the Kremlin. This partnership is believed to involve North Korea supplying military aid to bolster Russia’s war efforts, in exchange for economic benefits and advanced military technology.
Kim Jong Un articulated his positive outlook on the future trajectory of this bilateral relationship, stating, “I am always proud to be able to expect more excellent future of the bilateral relations by leading, together with you, the DPRK-Russia ties that has carried forward the history of common struggle.” This statement, reported by the official Korean Central News Agency, underscores the historical context and shared struggles that both nations believe underpin their current cooperation. DPRK is the acronym for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name.
The North Korean leader also conveyed his “firm belief” in Russia’s future prosperity and its ability to safeguard its “territorial integrity” under President Putin’s astute leadership. This reciprocal praise highlights a united front against perceived external pressures and a mutual recognition of leadership.
In a corresponding gesture, President Putin sent a letter to Kim Jong Un on Friday, commemorating Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule at the conclusion of World War II. In his message, Putin lauded the significant progress in relations, affirming that ties between the two nations have reached an “unprecedentedly high level of comprehensive strategic partnership.” He further emphasized their active cooperation across various sectors and concerted efforts towards ensuring regional security and stability.

Ukraine recently accused Moscow of deploying North Korean ballistic missiles in a devastating strike that resulted in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries. Furthermore, Kyiv has claimed that up to 50,000 North Korean troops are slated for deployment to Russia, though concrete evidence and a specific timeframe for this alleged deployment have yet to be provided.
