Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has recently offered a rare glimpse into his personal life, candidly discussing his long-term relationship with Shubhra Shetty and the significant twenty-year age difference that exists between them. During a revealing conversation with Janice Sequeira, Kashyap addressed the public scrutiny that often surrounds their pairing, admitting to moments of self-consciousness and even a past attempt to create distance due to the age gap. He also openly spoke about their future together, particularly concerning the topic of marriage.
Kashyap, currently 53, has been romantically involved with Shubhra, who is in her thirties, for several years. He shared that marriage is not something Shubhra prioritizes or believes in. Despite this, the filmmaker conveyed profound contentment with their bond, expressing a strong desire to maintain their relationship. “I’m very happy to be with her. I want to be with her. So, whatever that takes,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment. He also mused on the anxieties that can accompany an older partner, particularly the wish to remain healthy and outlive loved ones. Kashyap highlighted his perspective on societal expectations, asserting that while he contemplates the future, he refuses to allow external pressures to define or dictate the terms of their relationship. His primary focus remains on preserving the unique connection they share, stating, “As long as we have found what we have found now, I’m happy with anything. I don’t want to lose this.”
The age difference has, at times, posed personal challenges for Kashyap. He confessed to experiencing more self-consciousness about it than Shubhra. He recounted a specific period when the disparity became particularly apparent to him. “There was a point because her face doesn’t show her age. She still looks the same. She doesn’t look her age. So the thing is, the more I grew older and she kept looking the same, that’s when I became slightly conscious,” he explained, illustrating how the visual contrast made him more aware of their age gap.
Shubhra, in turn, shared a deeply moving anecdote from the nascent stages of their relationship, revealing that falling in love had been on her personal “bucket list.” Upon experiencing it with Kashyap, she expressed feeling such profound happiness that she felt she could “die happy.” This sentiment deeply affected Kashyap, who confessed to her that before their relationship, he had never feared death. Shubhra recounted his emotional response, where he told her that she had instilled in him a new desire to live, giving him something meaningful to strive for. She described this as a “very sweet way of looking at their bond.” The couple’s journey began when Shubhra Shetty worked as an assistant director at Kashyap’s production house, Phantom Films. While they were first seen together in 2015, Kashyap publicly acknowledged their relationship in 2018, marking a significant step in their shared narrative.
