While Google’s Pixel smartphones are celebrated for their pure Android experience and computational photography prowess, they have historically lagged behind competitors like Samsung in offering extensive customization options. Even Apple’s iPhone, once criticized for its rigid interface, has introduced more flexibility in recent years, allowing users to personalize elements such as the Quick Settings panel. This disparity often leaves Pixel users desiring more control over their device’s aesthetics and functionality, despite Google’s overarching influence on the Android ecosystem.
However, a significant stride towards greater personalization is now evident with the latest Android 17 update for Pixel phones. This crucial enhancement, first seen in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 rollout on Friday, introduces a long-awaited Quick Settings layout changer. While the initial implementation offers limited scope, it nonetheless empowers users to reorder key components within the Quick Settings area, including the arrangement of Quick Settings tiles, the brightness slider, and the integrated media player.
To access this newfound capability, Pixel users need only swipe down to reveal their Quick Settings. A newly integrated edit button, easily identifiable, will now appear. Tapping this button navigates to a dedicated Quick Settings editor screen. This screen is divided into two primary sections: one for editing the individual Quick Settings tiles themselves, and another, titled “Layout,” which allows for the reordering of the aforementioned elements. This Layout panel provides the ability to adjust the placement of the media player, the brightness slider, and the entire block of Quick Settings shortcuts.
Currently, this feature primarily focuses on reordering rather than resizing these elements. The default configuration typically positions the brightness slider at the top, followed by the Quick Settings tiles in the middle, and the media player at the bottom. However, with this update, users can now freely swap these positions to suit their individual preferences and optimize accessibility. For instance, relocating the brightness slider to the bottom can significantly improve reachability for one-handed operation.
As this functionality is currently part of the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, it is not yet universally available. Users eager to experience this improvement immediately can enroll in the Android Beta Program. For the broader Pixel user base, a stable release incorporating this feature is anticipated around December of this year. This update marks a welcome step by Google towards offering a more tailored user experience on its Pixel devices, bringing them closer to the level of customization found on other leading Android smartphones.
