At least 7 Hindu devotees killed in Indian temple stampede

In a tragic incident that sent shockwaves across the nation, at least seven Hindu devotees lost their lives on a Monday morning due to a devastating crowd crush at a Shiva temple in eastern India. The unfortunate event unfolded as tens of thousands of worshippers had converged to partake in a significant religious observance.

The calamity transpired in the vicinity of Ashok Dham, a revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in Lakhisarai. This particular day held immense spiritual significance, falling within the holy month of Shravan, a period when Mondays are traditionally regarded as exceptionally auspicious for acts of worship and devotion.

Initial reports suggest that the deadly crush was triggered by widespread panic. It is believed that misinformation circulated among the massive gathering, indicating that a live wire from a fallen electricity pole had caused electrocutions among those waiting in queues for the Ashok Dham temple. This terrifying rumor incited a frantic scramble for safety, leading to the collapse of a barricade and people piling on top of one another. The New Indian Express reported on the unfolding disaster, detailing the horrifying sequence of events.

While at least seven fatalities have been confirmed, the situation remains precarious, with more than ten individuals sustaining serious injuries. According to All India Radio, officials expressed grim expectations that the death toll could unfortunately rise. The Lakhisarai District Magistrate confirmed that the crowd crush occurred around 6:30 a.m. local time, catching many by surprise during the early hours of their spiritual pilgrimage.

Samrat Choudhary, the chief minister of Bihar, the state where Lakhisarai is located, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. He described the events at the temple as “extremely tragic and heart-wrenching,” conveying the deep distress he felt upon hearing the news. In a social media statement, he offered his “deepest condolences” to the families who had lost their loved ones in this devastating tragedy. To provide some relief to the affected families, a grant of approximately $4,184 is to be distributed to the immediate dependents of those who perished. Choudhary reiterated the state government’s unwavering support, stating, “In this hour of grief, the state government stands in complete solidarity and commitment with the bereaved families,” as he further added online.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also conveyed his sorrow, stating he was “deeply saddened” by the tragic loss of lives. My heartfelt condolences, he expressed, were extended to the bereaved families of all those who succumbed in this heart-wrenching incident. He further offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured and invoked divine strength and patience for all those impacted by this profound tragedy during such a difficult time. This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in managing large religious gatherings and the critical need for stringent safety measures to prevent such avoidable catastrophes in the future across India.
