Ravindra Jadeja scripts history with 350th Test wicket, joins Kapil, Botham, Vettori in elite club | Cricket News

In a remarkable display of his multifaceted talent, Ravindra Jadeja etched his name into the annals of cricket history, becoming only the fourth player globally to achieve the rare feat of accumulating at least 4,000 runs and securing 350 or more wickets in the demanding format of Test cricket. This significant milestone was reached during the third day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Jadeja’s pivotal 350th Test wicket arrived when Sri Lankan batsman Keshara Nuwantha attempted an ambitious slap-drive off an away-turning delivery. The ball, deflecting off his knee, ballooned conveniently into the waiting hands of Shubman Gill, who completed the catch. This momentous wicket not only marked a personal best for Jadeja but also positioned him as only the fifth Indian bowler to reach this impressive 350-wicket benchmark in Test matches, joining an illustrious group that includes Anil Kumble (619), Ravichandran Ashwin (537), Kapil Dev (434), and Harbhajan Singh (417). Prior to his bowling heroics, Jadeja had also contributed 13 runs to India’s first innings total of 462, showcasing his consistent all-round utility as Sri Lanka responded with 243 for 7 wickets.

This recent accomplishment places Jadeja in an exceptionally exclusive cohort of legendary all-rounders. The esteemed company he now keeps includes the iconic Kapil Dev, England’s formidable Ian Botham, and New Zealand’s former captain, Daniel Vettori. Kapil Dev stands as the leading run-scorer among these four cricketing greats, having amassed 5,248 runs and taken 434 wickets across 131 Tests for India. Ian Botham concluded his distinguished career with 5,200 runs and 383 wickets in 102 Tests, while Daniel Vettori contributed 4,531 runs and 362 wickets over 113 Tests. What makes Jadeja’s achievement particularly noteworthy is that, with 4,108 runs and 350 wickets in just 90 Tests, he is the sole member of this elite quartet to have attained this remarkable double before even reaching his 100th Test match. This underscores the exceptional efficiency and profound impact of his all-round contributions to the sport.

Furthermore, this landmark solidifies Jadeja’s standing as one of the most prolific left-arm spinners in the history of Test cricket. He now ranks third among all-time left-arm spinners in terms of Test wickets, surpassed only by Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath (433) and Daniel Vettori (362). Other notable left-arm spinners include England’s Derek Underwood (297) and Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam (271). Jadeja’s consistent brilliance with both bat and ball has firmly established him as an indispensable asset for the Indian Test team over the past decade. His unique ability to contribute crucial runs lower down the order, coupled with his controlled yet penetrative spin bowling, has consistently provided India with the perfect balance in their playing XI. Among left-arm spinners who have taken at least 125 Test wickets, only South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj boasts a superior strike rate of 56.4, slightly edging out Jadeja’s impressive 58.1. While Kapil, Botham, and Vettori achieved their 4,000 runs and 350 wickets after lengthy careers, Jadeja’s expedited journey to this milestone, in fewer than 100 matches, truly sets him apart. With the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, Jadeja has every opportunity to further enhance his already impressive tallies, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest all-rounders to have graced the game.
