Mattel Ignites Gaming Ambitions with Launch of Mattel Game Studios, Signaling Major Shift in Strategy
El Segundo, CA – August 17, 2024 – More than four decades after dipping its toes into the video game world with a Commodore 64 spin-off of its iconic Barbie brand, toy giant Mattel is making a significant leap into interactive entertainment. The company today announced the formation of Mattel Game Studios, an internal development and publishing powerhouse poised to create original video games based on its beloved portfolio of brands, including Hot Wheels and Uno.
This strategic move marks a substantial evolution in Mattel’s approach to gaming. Previously relying on licensing deals with third-party developers, the creation of an in-house studio signifies a commitment to directly shaping the digital experiences of its popular franchises. Mattel Game Studios will operate with a dedicated team of 300 developers, strategically located across offices in Los Angeles and Hangzhou, China.
The new entity will function as a game studio and publisher hybrid, nested under the existing Mattel Digital Studios, which will continue to oversee its extensive portfolio of licensing agreements for mobile, console, and PC games. This integrated structure aims to streamline development and publishing processes while leveraging Mattel’s vast creative resources.
"Mattel Game Studios gives us the scale and capabilities to build and publish more original gaming experiences inspired by our iconic brands," stated Marcus Liassides, the newly appointed head of Mattel Digital Studios, in a press release issued on August 17th. "Together with our successful collaborations across the industry, it strengthens our ability to reach fans through great games wherever they choose to play."
The announcement comes with several exciting updates on upcoming titles. Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite, a couch co-op roguelike for mobile, made its debut in June. Mattel also teased UNO Wild, described as a unique new Uno "experience" currently undergoing a "soft-launch" phase. Furthermore, a new Hot Wheels game is confirmed to be "in active development," promising fresh racing thrills for fans.
Mattel’s foray into in-house game development, however, arrives at a time when the industry has seen other major players, including fellow toy titan Hasbro, retreat from similar ambitions due to the inherent challenges of game creation. Hasbro recently faced significant financial write-downs and canceled several high-profile projects, highlighting the costly and complex nature of game development. Even tech giants like Amazon have struggled with internal AAA game development, eventually scaling back their efforts.
Industry observers are cautiously optimistic about Mattel’s prospects. While the company undoubtedly possesses a rich library of intellectual property ripe for digital adaptation, the competitive and demanding landscape of video game development presents significant hurdles. The question remains whether Mattel will adopt a more measured approach with "less grand ambitions" compared to its peers, focusing on experiences that genuinely resonate with its core audience.
Despite the challenges, the potential for innovative and engaging titles is considerable. The upcoming Barbie Rewind, a remastered anthology collection of decades of Barbie games, is set to be released later this year, showcasing the enduring appeal of its brands. Last year also saw the launch of Hot Wheels Let’s Race: Ultimate Speed. Fans are already speculating about the possibilities, from a "Hot Wheels meets Grand Theft Auto" experience to a modern Barbie cozy sim.
The launch of Mattel Game Studios marks a pivotal moment for the company, signaling a bold new chapter in its long history of entertainment. Whether this strategic shift will usher in a new era of successful digital experiences or face the same pitfalls as its predecessors remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the gaming world will be watching with keen interest as Mattel Game Studios endeavors to translate its iconic toys into compelling virtual adventures.
