Sonos Elevates iPhone Experience with Long-Awaited Live Activities Support
San Francisco, CA – Sonos, a leading purveyor of smart speakers and audio systems, has rolled out a significant update to its mobile application, finally integrating support for iOS Live Activities. This highly anticipated feature grants iPhone users unprecedented quick access to playback controls directly from their lock screen, a functionality that has been "much requested, anticipated, and needed," according to a Reddit post Sonos shared today and subsequently spotted by 9to5Mac.
The addition marks a pivotal moment for Sonos users on iOS, bringing a level of convenience previously enjoyed by their Android counterparts. While current limitations mean features like displaying album art are not yet available, the Sonos Live Activity provides essential playback information and controls, enabling users to manage their music or podcasts without needing to fully unlock their iPhone and navigate to the Sonos app. This streamlines the user experience, allowing for immediate interaction with their Sonos system.
The journey to Live Activities integration has been a lengthy one. Sonos CEO Tom Conrad hinted at the upcoming support for Live Activities and similar lock screen controls – already present in the Android version of the app – during a Bloomberg interview last February. This commitment comes after a period of intense scrutiny for Sonos, particularly following a major Sonos app update in 2024 that drew significant user backlash. In response to these concerns and to empower user choice, Live Activities support is disabled by default and requires users to manually enable it through both the Sonos app’s preferences and the Sonos app section within iOS settings.
Once activated, the Live Activity springs into action "after you initiate playback and then close the app." It intelligently displays the name of the speaker group or room where audio is currently playing, along with the title of the track or podcast. This persistent notification remains on the lock screen, offering a dynamic and interactive control hub. Critically, the Live Activity is designed for efficiency; it automatically disappears from the lock screen 15 minutes after playback ceases, maintaining a clean and uncluttered interface.
While the current update extends the reach of Live Activities to Apple Watch and CarPlay, allowing the notification to be displayed on these devices, a key distinction remains: direct controls are not yet supported on these platforms. This means users can see what’s playing but cannot manipulate playback from their wrist or car’s infotainment system. Sonos has acknowledged this limitation, stating that its development team is actively working on improving the new feature. Furthermore, the company is "exploring alternative ways to enhance the lock screen experience," particularly regarding the highly requested inclusion of album art, signaling a continued commitment to refining and expanding this valuable new functionality. The timeline for the implementation of full control capabilities on Apple Watch and CarPlay remains unspecified, but the ongoing development efforts suggest future enhancements are on the horizon.
