White House Honors Teen Lifeguard for Heroic California Beach Rescue
Washington D.C. – In a heartwarming ceremony at the Oval Office, President Donald Trump personally lauded 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams for his courageous act in saving a 10-year-old Indian-origin boy from being swept away by powerful waves at a California beach last month. The remarkable rescue, captured in a viral video, garnered widespread attention and prompted the presidential invitation.
The Oval Office gathering included Ryder Williams and his family, as well as the rescued boy, Nathaniel Rai, his sister Layla, and their father, Sumit Rai. President Trump extended his congratulations to Nathaniel, remarking, "I want to congratulate Nathaniel Rai for coming through an ordeal. That means you are going to have good luck in life." With a touch of characteristic humor, he then jested to Nathaniel, "You are very lucky I was not on service that day," before turning his full praise to Williams for his daring actions.
The incident unfolded on July 25 at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Williams, on duty at the time, witnessed Nathaniel lose his footing in ankle-deep water approximately 20 yards from his lifeguard tower. Without hesitation, he sprang into action to rescue the struggling boy from the strong currents.
"He’s a real hero," President Trump declared, gesturing towards Williams, who sat beside him. Also present were Williams’ parents, Shane and Shannon, and fellow lifeguard Aaron Bonin, who assisted in the rescue. The widely shared video of the dramatic rescue had caught the President’s eye, leading to his decision to invite the young hero and his family to the White House.
President Trump further emphasized the miraculous nature of the event, telling Nathaniel, "It’s an amazing thing. And he is a real lucky guy, too. God was watching you."
Recalling the intense moments, Williams described how his training kicked in. "In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training. We are trained so well by many to handle that situation as best we can. So I really was thinking about how to get the boy out of the water as fast as I can," he explained.
Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, expressed profound gratitude to the lifeguards for saving his son’s life, echoing the sentiment of relief and thankfulness that pervaded the room.
As a special gesture, President Trump announced that the visitors would also receive a tour of President Abraham Lincoln’s bedroom, which famously served as his office and the Cabinet Room where he signed the Emancipation Proclamation, adding a historical dimension to their memorable visit to the White House.
