Twisha faced 'sustained psychological harm' from husband, mother-in-law: CBI chargesheet

CBI Files Charges Against Husband, Mother-in-Law in Former Model Twisha Sharma’s Suicide Case

Bhopal, India – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a comprehensive charge sheet accusing Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, a former district judge, of abetting the suicide of former actor-model Twisha Sharma. The CBI’s investigation, detailed in a nearly 600-page document submitted to a special court in Bhopal on August 14, alleges that Twisha, 33, endured "sustained mental torture" at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law, leading to her death in May this year, just five months after her marriage.

Twisha Sharma, a former Miss Pune, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital residence in Bhopal on May 12. According to the First Information Report (FIR), her husband, Samarth Singh, a lawyer by profession, transported her to AIIMS Bhopal, claiming she had hanged herself at home at approximately 10:20 PM. However, medical personnel at AIIMS informed the police that she was brought in deceased.

The CBI’s charge sheet explicitly accuses Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh of inflicting "sustained psychological harm" on Twisha. They have been charged under sections 85 (cruelty and harassment caused by husband and his family members), 108 (abetment of suicide), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The agency has indicated that the investigation remains open regarding allegations of dowry demands and dowry death, suggesting further charges may be filed.

Evidence cited in the charge sheet paints a grim picture of Twisha’s final days. Her conversations with her sister-in-law, mother, and father reveal increasing aggression and violence from Samarth. The charge sheet notes that Samarth discovered Twisha hanging from a gym belt around 10:23 PM on May 12. Crucially, a message sent by Twisha to her sister-in-law at 9:20 PM, shortly before her death, read: "Ask him (Samarth Singh) to collect left over of his wife. But tomorrow. Let me die in peace right now."

The case saw significant developments following an initial police probe and a second autopsy ordered by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This second post-mortem, conducted by a four-member team from AIIMS Delhi, was initiated to address the family’s allegations of discrepancies in the first autopsy performed by AIIMS Bhopal. The Delhi team’s report definitively confirmed "asphyxia as a result of ante-mortem hanging which is suicidal in manner produced by the examined ligature material, the gymnastic belt with a ring" as the cause of death.

Further forensic psychological assessment of Twisha’s diaries, chats, and CCTV footage indicated that she experienced "hopelessness, sustained psychological harm and absence of support." The charge sheet meticulously records statements from her chats detailing "character assassination," including Samarth questioning the paternity of her aborted child, and immense pressure to transfer ₹20 lakh from her mutual funds into a joint account for investment in Chinese markets.

A particularly disturbing revelation from the charge sheet highlights a message from Twisha to her sister-in-law, Rashi Abrol, on May 9. Twisha wrote: "He (Samarth Singh) has crossed all the limits and he asked her whether it was his child or someone else’s, is that why I aborted it. I am feeling suffocated. I swear I will be able to find courage to finish myself completely… I will find a way to vanish."

The CBI has sent Twisha’s iPhone and DVR data to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), DFSS New Delhi, for forensic examination. The agency hopes this extraction will "reveal incriminating material pertaining to the case against the accused," further strengthening their case. The arrest of Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh by the CBI followed the findings of the second autopsy, signaling a significant step towards justice in this tragic case.
