Residents in Barton upon Humber are being invited to help shape an ambitious new project to bring nature, water and wildlife back into the heart of the town.
The proposed ‘Rewet, Rewild, Reconnect’ project will focus on restoring ponds, streams and riverside habitats to boost biodiversity, strengthen flood resilience and create more opportunities for people to enjoy and connect with their local environment.
Cllr Neil Poole, deputy leader and cabinet member for highways and flooding, said: “If we are going to invest time and seek external funding, it has to be because residents want it and can see the benefit.
“Projects like this improve wildlife habitats, strengthen natural flood management and create opportunities for families, schools and volunteers to get involved locally. It must be shaped by the community.”
The project will:
- Revive ponds and wetland areas
- Create richer habitats for birds, insects and native species
- Slow and manage surface water naturally
- Provide volunteering, education and heritage activities for local people
- Make green spaces more accessible and enjoyable.
Before anything moves forward, North Lincolnshire Council wants to hear directly from residents.
The Council will explore applying for funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to help deliver the project. Any future steps would be subject to formal approval.
