India Reaffirms Steadfast Support for Palestine Amidst Gaza Crisis

Ramallah, Palestine – India has unequivocally reaffirmed its enduring support for the Palestinian people and a negotiated two-state solution to the protracted conflict in the Middle East. This commitment was underscored during high-level discussions between Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary (Consular, Passport and Visa, and Overseas Indian Affairs) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Palestine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, on Tuesday.

Secretary Ranganathan’s visit to Palestine marks a significant diplomatic engagement, with her initial meeting with Minister Shahin setting a comprehensive agenda. The talks encompassed the full spectrum of India-Palestine relations, with particular emphasis on the escalating developments in Gaza, the urgent humanitarian needs of the region, and India’s long-standing development partnership with the Palestinian people.

According to an official statement from the Indian Representative Office in Ramallah, the Indian Secretary "reaffirmed India’s consistent support for the Palestinian people and negotiated two-State solution." This reiteration highlights India’s consistent foreign policy stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for a resolution that ensures peace and stability for both sides.

A central point of discussion was the dire humanitarian situation unfolding in Gaza. Secretary Ranganathan conveyed India’s profound concern over the "grave humanitarian situation" and emphasized the critical necessity for the "safe, sustained and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance" to the affected civilian population. This underscores India’s commitment to alleviating suffering and ensuring vital aid reaches those in need, free from obstruction.

Beyond immediate humanitarian concerns, Secretary Ranganathan reiterated India’s strong backing for all efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. She stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable pathways towards a "lasting political resolution of the conflict." This position reflects India’s belief in peaceful negotiation as the cornerstone of international relations.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the extensive scope of India’s development and humanitarian assistance to Palestine. Ongoing initiatives in crucial sectors such as health, education, and capacity-building were thoroughly discussed. Both officials explored new avenues for cooperation, identifying areas where India’s rich development experience could be leveraged to address the evolving needs of the Palestinian people.

Minister Shahin, reflecting on her first visit to India in January of this year, expressed deep appreciation for India’s continuous and multifaceted support. She specifically acknowledged India’s contributions through various development projects, comprehensive capacity-building programs, scholarships, humanitarian aid, and significant contributions to Palestinian institutions and UN agencies operating in the region.

A highlight of the discussions was the progress made on the Government of India-funded Palestinian Institute of Diplomacy. The anticipation of cooperation with the prestigious Sushma Swaraj Foreign Service Institute also received special attention, signifying a shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and expertise.

The meeting concluded with a mutual reaffirmation of the enduring friendship between the peoples of India and Palestine. Both sides expressed their unwavering commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation and ties, underscoring a shared vision for a future of enhanced partnership and mutual support.
