India Triumphs Over Pakistan in Thrilling Hockey World Cup Clash, Advances to Second Round

Amstelveen, Netherlands – August 19, 2026 – In a highly anticipated and fiercely contested encounter at Wagener Stadium, a resilient 10-man India held off arch-rivals Pakistan with a 5-3 victory to secure their spot in the second round of the Hockey World Cup. The crucial Pool D match saw India, ranked eighth globally, maintain their hopes for a semi-final berth, while the defeat unfortunately eliminated Pakistan from the tournament hosted in Amstelveen.

The atmosphere was electric as both South Asian giants battled for supremacy. India’s captain, Harmanpreet Singh, set the tone early, converting a penalty corner in the fourth minute to open the scoring. The momentum continued with Abhishek doubling India’s lead in the tenth minute, deftly finishing off a pass from Mandeep Singh.

Harmanpreet Singh was in stellar form, adding another goal for India in the 20th minute from another penalty corner. However, Pakistan responded swiftly, with Hannan Shahid capitalizing on a rebound from the goalkeeper to keep their hopes alive. Abhishek further extended India’s lead to 4-1 following a fortunate deflection off a Pakistani stick. Not to be outdone, Sufyan Khan showcased his drag-flicking prowess from a penalty corner, narrowing the gap to 4-2 by halftime.

The third quarter saw Hardik Singh convert a penalty stroke early on, pushing India’s lead to 5-2. The intensity of the match was palpable, culminating in green cards for Pakistan’s Zikriya Hayat and India’s Rajinder Singh before the quarter concluded. Pakistan mounted a spirited comeback at the start of the fourth quarter when Shahid netted his second goal in the 45th minute, capitalizing on Hardik’s loss of possession in midfield, bringing the score to 5-3.

Tensions remained high as India’s video review, initiated by Dilpreet Singh in the 53rd minute, proved unsuccessful. A pivotal moment occurred in the 55th minute when Aditya Lalage received a yellow card, forcing him out for the remainder of the match and leaving India with ten players. Despite being a man down, the Indian squad displayed remarkable composure and grit, holding off Pakistan in the closing minutes to seal the vital win.

This victory places India in second position in Pool D with six points, adding to their earlier 3-1 triumph over Wales.

Meanwhile, England solidified their dominant position at the top of Pool D with a resounding 8-2 victory over Wales earlier in the day at Wagener Stadium. With a perfect nine points from three wins, England has comfortably advanced to the semi-finals.

Both England and India now prepare for the second round, where they will face formidable opponents. England is set to play the Netherlands, while India will go head-to-head with either Argentina or New Zealand in what promises to be another thrilling stage of the tournament.

The Hockey World Cup 2026 continues to deliver high-octane action and dramatic finishes, captivating fans worldwide.
