Veteran Malayalam Film Producer Geo Kuttappan Passes Away at 90
The Malayalam film industry is mourning the loss of a legendary figure as veteran producer and distributor N.G. John—widely known as Geo Kuttappan—passed away early Wednesday morning. He was 90 years old.
According to reports, Kuttappan suffered a heart attack and passed away at approximately 1:30 am at the Ernakulam Medical Centre in Kochi. His death comes as a profound shock to his family, who were in the midst of preparations to celebrate his milestone 90th birthday.
A Legacy Defined by Cinema
Born into a family deeply entrenched in the history of Kerala’s film industry, N.G. John was the son of N.X. George, one of the pioneers of early film distribution in the region. Carrying forward this rich legacy, Geo Kuttappan became a stalwart in both production and distribution, shaping the landscape of Malayalam cinema for decades.
His influence extended far beyond individual film projects. Kuttappan was a central figure in industry governance, maintaining a long-standing association with the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, dating back to its early days following its inception in 1939. His leadership was further solidified in 1966 when he was elected president of the Kerala Film Chamber, a role he served with distinction for six years. He also played an active role as an executive member of the South Indian Film Chamber.
Collaborations and Iconic Credits
Geo Kuttappan is perhaps best remembered for his prolific and successful partnership with the late iconic filmmaker I.V. Sasi. Together, they delivered a string of significant Malayalam hits, including Iniyum Puzhayozhukum, Ezham Kadalinnakkare, Meen, Innallenkil Naale, Eenaadu, Iniyenkilum, and Ithrayum Kaalam.
His production portfolio was vast and diverse. Notable credits include J. Sasikumar’s Minimol, M. Krishnan Nair’s Rajaneegandhi, and Bhadran’s Aattuvanchi Ulanjappol. Perhaps most notably, he produced the 1984 film Unaroo, a crucial early work in the career of acclaimed director Mani Ratnam, which featured powerhouse performances by Sukumaran and Mohanlal.
Funeral Arrangements
The film fraternity, including the FEFKA Directors’ Union, has expressed deep condolences, honoring Kuttappan’s immense contributions to the industry.
The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday. He will be laid to rest at the Mary Queen’s Church Cemetery on Pipeline Road in Thoppil, Edappally, Kochi. His passing marks the end of an era for the industry, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by filmmakers and audiences alike for years to come.
