NTA Defends ₹200 Answer Key Challenge Fee, Citing Need to Curb Frivolous Objections
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a formal clarification regarding the mandatory fee structure for challenging answer keys in competitive examinations, including the upcoming UGC-NET 2026. The agency took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address growing concerns from candidates who have labeled the ₹200-per-question fee as "too expensive."
Why the Fee Exists
In its statement, the NTA emphasized that the financial charge is not designed as a profit-generating mechanism. Instead, the agency described the fee as a necessary procedural safeguard intended to prevent the submission of frivolous or unsubstantiated challenges. According to the NTA, the volume of challenges received for major exams can be overwhelming; by requiring a nominal fee, the agency aims to ensure that candidates only submit objections when they have concrete evidence to support their claims.
Furthermore, the agency noted that processing an influx of baseless objections significantly delays the announcement of final results. By filtering out non-serious claims, the NTA hopes to streamline the evaluation process and provide timely outcomes for all aspirants.
The Mechanism of Impact
A critical point of the NTA’s clarification is how the challenge process benefits the broader candidate pool. The agency explained that the system does not function on an individual basis. When an objection is submitted and subsequently upheld by a panel of subject matter experts, the correction is applied uniformly to all students who appeared for that particular exam.
"One valid challenge can potentially impact the evaluation of lakhs of students," the agency stated. Because a successful challenge affects the scoring of the entire candidate cohort, the NTA maintains that there must be a rigorous vetting process to prevent errors in the final, corrected answer key.

Addressing the financial burden on students, the NTA clarified that the ₹200 fee is fully refundable if the challenge is found to be accurate and is accepted by the subject experts. This policy is intended to ensure that students with legitimate grievances are not penalized, while those submitting challenges without merit bear the cost of the administrative review.
The NTA has advised students to exercise caution and diligence before initiating a challenge. Candidates are encouraged to thoroughly cross-reference their answers with reputable academic material and the official question paper before submitting an objection.
"The fee is refunded if you’re right. It exists to discourage frivolous challenges, not to profit," the NTA reiterated.
