‘Awarapan 2’ Producer Addresses Controversy Over Replacing Singer Mustafa Zahid: "What is Yours Remains Yours"
The release of Awarapan 2 has ignited a wave of nostalgia and debate, as the haunting melody of the original film’s classic, "Toh Phir Aao," echoed through theaters. While fans of lead actor Emraan Hashmi have been captured on camera singing along with fervor, the film has also reopened a dialogue regarding the exclusion of original Pakistani singer Mustafa Zahid from the project’s revamped soundtrack.
As the industry navigates the complexities of cross-border collaborations, producer Vishesh Bhatt has finally broken his silence on the decision to replace the singer with composer Mithoon for the new rendition.
A Question of Inevitability
In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, Vishesh Bhatt described the replacement as an "inevitable" outcome, citing the prevailing political climate that restricts the involvement of Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry.
Bhatt expressed frustration with the online discourse surrounding the switch, which he feels often misrepresents the collaborative nature of filmmaking. "I find the questions ridiculous sometimes," Bhatt stated. "For instance, I was not part of Jannat 2. But nobody takes Jannat away from me. Maine banaya hai (I have made it). Why do people think something is taken away? Some of that is very internet-driven, and sometimes the talent also gets gaslit by fans… It’s nothing to do with any of that. What is yours will always be yours."
Beyond the geopolitical constraints, Bhatt noted that the decision was also rooted in artistic necessity. He explained that revisiting iconic tracks is a daunting task, as listeners invariably measure new versions against the heavy weight of nostalgia. "Revisiting a hit track is inherently tough," he added, noting that even composers like Pritam—who previously reworked Zahid’s music—understand the challenges of trying to match or surpass a beloved original.
Mustafa Zahid’s Emotional Reflection
Despite the controversy, Mustafa Zahid has chosen a path of grace. After attending a screening of the film in a Canadian theater, the singer shared an emotional tribute on social media, reflecting on his enduring legacy.
"Nearly two decades ago, Awarapan gave me a place in millions of hearts. Tonight, sitting in a theatre watching Awarapan 2, time stood still," he wrote.
Zahid made it clear that he bears no ill will toward the new production. Describing the moment the film opened with his original voice—accompanied by the cheers of the audience—he noted that he felt a sense of fulfillment. "In that particular moment, I think I received what I always wanted: Dignity and an insane amount of love from all of you."
The singer concluded his message by offering his congratulations to the film’s team and expressing optimism about the future, noting that he hopes to reconnect with his audience when the already-confirmed third installment hits screens.
Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 features an ensemble cast led by Emraan Hashmi, alongside Disha Patani and veteran actress Shabana Azmi. While the debate over the soundtrack continues, the film has successfully managed to keep the legacy of the original franchise alive for a new generation of cinema-goers.
