Mini Mathur Opens Up About Interfaith Marriage with Kabir Khan and Raising Children Without Religious Labels

In a recent, candid conversation, television personality Mini Mathur has offered an intimate look into her long-standing marriage with acclaimed filmmaker Kabir Khan, detailing how the couple has navigated their interfaith union while maintaining their own personal values.

Reflecting on their journey, which began in the mid-1990s, Mathur discussed how she and Khan successfully fostered a family environment that transcends traditional religious barriers. Despite being raised in a "conservative Mathur" household, she noted that her parents were remarkably accepting of her partner.

A Change of Heart

Mathur recalled that her father, who was generally open-minded about her social circle, initially harbored slight reservations about the religious difference. "I would say, ‘Papa, he is a Muslim. He is Khan,’" she recounted. However, her father’s hesitation was short-lived. Just three days later, he famously dismissed the concern, stating, "So what if he is Khan? There’s just a difference of ‘na’ in Khan and Khanna. Let it be."

This acceptance paved the way for a wedding that Mathur describes as a beautiful, joyous celebration of two cultures blending together.

Redefining Identity

Beyond their own marriage, the couple—who have been together for over two decades—made a deliberate choice regarding their children, Vivaan and Sairah. Mathur revealed that she has consistently left religious affiliation forms blank or marked them as "humanism" for her children’s official documentation. She noted that she never faced administrative obstacles from government agencies while doing so.

"My kids shouldn’t have either of the parents’ names. I said if they are writing Khan, then they should write Mathur as well," she explained, emphasizing her desire to maintain her own identity, including refusing to change her name after marriage.

Cultural Harmony

While Mathur maintains that she and Kabir are not strictly religious, she highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions. She continues to observe rituals like Karva Chauth and havan, not as religious obligations, but as a way to maintain a cultural bond with her parents. "I am not a religious person myself, but these are the things I have grown up with," she shared, adding that their home is a space where all traditions are respected.

This glimpse into their private lives comes at a time when the couple remains a prominent fixture in the entertainment industry. Kabir Khan has built a reputation for socially conscious storytelling, directing impactful films such as New York, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and more recently, Chandu Champion.

The couple’s approach to their family life serves as a modern blueprint for interfaith harmony. As Mathur recently shared in a candid interview, their focus remains on raising their children with a sense of universal humanity rather than sectarian identity.
