Historic ‘Godzilla’ El Niño Threatens Global Weather Chaos and Record-Breaking Heat

A powerful and “unprecedented” weather event is brewing in the Pacific Ocean, with the UK’s Met Office warning that the developing El Niño is on track to become the strongest event of its kind in more than a century.

Meteorologists are forecasting a massive spike in Pacific sea surface temperatures, projected to rise by 3°C. For context, a standard El Niño event typically sees an increase of 1°C, with a 2°C rise considered a “big event.” This surge to 3°C makes the current phenomenon an outlier in modern climate records.

“We’re expecting the biggest El Niño for over a century, peaking at something over 3°C,” said Prof. Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office. “That is unheard of in modern climate records… It’s up 2°C degrees already.”

Global Consequences: From Drought to Deluge

The impacts of this climatic shift will be felt worldwide. While the tropics, particularly parts of South America and the west Pacific, are bracing for severe and devastating droughts, the ripple effects will reach far beyond the equatorial belt.

In the UK and north-western Europe, the pattern is expected to trigger a significant shift in the coming months. Wave-like atmospheric disturbances emanating from the tropics are likely to bring increased storminess and heavy rainfall to the UK starting as early as November. Similar drought risks are also being monitored in southern Africa and north-east Australia.

A Path to the Hottest Year on Record

Beyond localized weather patterns, experts warn that this intense El Niño will exacerbate the global climate crisis. As the ocean releases vast amounts of heat into the atmosphere, global average temperatures are expected to soar in the year following the winter peak of the event.

Dr. Nick Dunstone, a science fellow at the Met Office, noted that 2027 is now being forecast to replace 2024 as the warmest year on record. This would likely cause global temperatures to temporarily exceed the critical threshold of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

UK Water Scarcity Persists

The looming transition to a stormier autumn comes at a difficult time for the UK, which has just endured its driest July in 190 years. Recent heatwaves left 71.3% of England and the entirety of Wales under drought conditions, placing immense strain on agriculture, wildlife, and water infrastructure.

Despite recent heavy showers—such as the 52.5mm of rain recorded in Morecambe, Lancashire—the National Drought Group warns that the current water scarcity crisis remains far from resolved. Reservoir levels are currently at 62.6%, roughly 16.3% lower than what is typical for this time of year.

Officials emphasize that it will take months of sustained, consistent rainfall to replenish rivers and groundwater levels. The National Drought Group has shifted to weekly meetings to coordinate a response to the increasingly volatile climate, noting that current forecasts do not suggest sufficient rainfall this autumn to ensure a full recovery before the end of the year.
