From Film Set to Matrimony: How Akshay Kumar’s Wedding Day Played Out Like a Bollywood Blockbuster

In the glitzy world of Bollywood, where celebrity weddings are often synonymous with month-long festivities, designer ensembles, and massive PR campaigns, the 2001 union of Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna remains a masterclass in understated elegance. Recently, filmmaker Suneel Darshan offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the couple’s big day, revealing that it was far from a typical star-studded affair.

An Unusual Deal and a Cinematic Escape

The journey to their wedding was paved by a rather unique ultimatum. As the story goes, the couple had made a pact: if Twinkle’s film Mela, which co-starred Aamir Khan, failed at the box office, she would move forward with marrying Akshay without further delay. When the film did not meet expectations, the duo decided it was time.

However, the wedding day itself was anything but conventional. While most grooms spend their final hours as bachelors in preparation or relaxation, Akshay Kumar was hard at work. The actor was on the sets of Ek Rishta: The Bond of Love, filming scenes alongside the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and Rakhee Gulzar at Natraj Studio.

Suneel Darshan, who directed the star in several films, recalled the moment he learned of the impending nuptials. “It was just me and a few others. It was a private affair, and they didn’t want to publicize it,” Darshan shared in an interview with Minutes of Masala.

A Stealthy Exit

The most iconic moment of the day arguably occurred when the cameras finally stopped rolling at 7:30 pm. Rather than opting for a chauffeured car or a dramatic exit, the “Khiladi” of Bollywood borrowed his makeup artist’s motorcycle. Donning a helmet to maintain his anonymity, he sped away from the studio, effectively slipping out of the public eye and into his new life.

“He borrowed his makeup artist’s bike, put his helmet on, and nobody could recognize him,” Darshan recounted. “He quickly reached home.”

Reflections on a Career Pivot

While the wedding remains a heartwarming anecdote, the conversation also touched upon the controversial legacy of Mela. Darshan expressed his long-held opinion that Twinkle Khanna was miscast in the 2000 film, suggesting that the creative vision of the director was not matched by the cast.

He further noted his dissatisfaction with the comments Twinkle made regarding the film post-release. “The director tried to make it with love, but she said some unsavoury things… you should be grateful,” Darshan added, emphasizing that the opportunity to work with a filmmaker at the peak of their career was a privilege.

Despite the complexities of their professional beginnings, Akshay and Twinkle’s intimate wedding—attended by only about 50 guests—marked the start of one of Bollywood’s most enduring partnerships. More than two decades later, the couple remains a cornerstone of the industry, raising their two children, Aarav and Nitara, away from the constant noise of the limelight that their secret, motorcycle-fueled wedding day once sought to avoid.
