Australia Boosts Support for Asian Language Fluency in Schools

In a significant move to foster linguistic diversity and cultural connection, the Australian government has announced a major funding initiative dedicated to enhancing fluency in eight major Asian languages. The program targets Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi, Telugu, and Urdu, aiming to support young Australians in maintaining ties to their heritage while developing critical global skills.

The initiative is backed by the “Fluency in Asian Languages” stream of the Community Language Schools Grants Program. Over the next four years, this funding will facilitate the development of refined teaching resources, professional development for educators, and the expansion of senior secondary language classes.

Dr. Anne Aly, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, emphasized the dual importance of the program. “These new grants enable young Australians to maintain a connection to their culture and family while building skills that strengthen Australia’s engagement with our region,” Dr. Aly stated.

A Multi-Million Dollar Investment

This latest round of funding is part of a broader federal government commitment, which involves an investment of A$25.6 million (S$23.3 million) over four years, starting in the 2025-26 period. The investment is designed to bolster community language schools across the nation, which currently provide instruction in over 80 languages to more than 90,000 students.

The initiative has already sparked a series of strategic collaborations and localized projects:

• Tamil Language Initiatives: The NSW Federation of Tamil Schools Inc is set to enhance learning resources for secondary students, creating more opportunities to use the language in real-world contexts. Additionally, the Tamil Study Centre Homebush Inc will launch a fluency program in Homebush, with plans to expand across New South Wales and offer digital resources nationwide.
• Academic Partnerships: The University of Sydney will assist community language schools in implementing robust curricula for students in Years 7–12. The university will also focus on teacher training and the creation of resources accessible on a national scale.
• Digital Infrastructure: In Canberra, the Australian National University is tasked with establishing “Digital Language Hubs.” These hubs will serve as centers for professional development and provide essential digital resources for teachers.
• Victorian Expansion: Community Languages Victoria Inc will spearhead the development of an online “Teachers Hub,” with a specific focus on amplifying language learning from middle school through to the senior secondary level.
