Warhammer 40k: Space Marines Codex Moves 16 Units To Legendary Status!

The Emperor’s New Steel: Major Codex Overhaul Reshapes the Space Marines

The Adeptus Astartes are undergoing a massive evolution. Following the recent reveal of the new Outrider Captain, Games Workshop has pulled back the curtain on the upcoming Codex: Space Marines, signaling a fundamental shift in how the Imperium’s finest will function on the tabletop this fall.

A New Vision: Elite, Powerful, and Fewer

The core philosophy behind this edition’s ruleset is a return to the thematic roots of the Space Marines: an elite force of superhuman warriors who operate in smaller, highly impactful numbers. To balance this, developers are implementing widespread points increases across the army. However, this isn’t a simple nerf; it is a fundamental recalibration of their battlefield identity.

To emphasize the legendary prowess of the Astartes, core stat lines are seeing significant buffs. The humble Intercessor is moving to Toughness 5, placing them on an even footing with Orks. Melee capabilities are also being sharpened, with chainswords and basic fists hitting at Strength 5. Perhaps most notably, the standard Bolt Rifle is gaining a two-mode firing system, allowing players to choose between standard strength or a “Focused Fire” profile that reaches Strength 6.

While Phobos-armored troops will retain their Toughness 4 profile, they are receiving a mobility upgrade, increasing their Movement to 8″. Even the iconic Terminators are slated for an upgrade, boasting a daunting Toughness 6 and heavy-hitting Strength 5 storm bolters.

Parity Across the Imperium

This power-scaling initiative is not restricted to Codex-compliant Chapters. Chaos Space Marines, as well as non-compliant loyalist factions like the Blood Angels and Space Wolves, are set to receive similar stat and weapon adjustments. This ensures that even before these factions receive their own dedicated codices later in the edition, they remain competitive and thematic. The integration of these updates into the official 40k app promises to keep the game balanced and accessible during this transition period.

The “Legendary” Shift

In a move that has sparked significant debate within the community, several classic units are being moved to “Legendary” status. While these units will no longer be available for purchase, many are being repurposed as “Legendary Proxies,” allowing players to continue using their collections by treating them as modern counterparts. Notable examples include:

  • Tactical Squads acting as Intercessors.
  • Devastators counting as Desolation Squads.
  • Pedro Kantor and Uriel Ventris being fielded as generic Captains.

Furthermore, a long list of staple units—including the Centurion squads, various Predator variants, the Whirlwind, and several Flyer models—are moving to the standard “Legends” format. While these units remain legal for play and fully supported via the app, their removal from the core production line marks the end of an era for many veteran collectors.

What Lies Ahead?

The shift toward these “Legendary Proxies” feels like a potential stopgap, leading many to speculate that we may see modern, redesigned kits for these iconic characters and squads in the future. While the loss of long-standing plastic staples like the Centurions may be a point of contention for some, the overall direction of the game suggests a leaner, more elite, and more lethal future for the Adeptus Astartes.

As the release date approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting further details on points values and the full range of new, multi-part kits accompanying this massive update.
