Buc-ee’s CEO Shifts Expansion Strategy, Prioritizing Conservative Markets Over ‘Blue’ Districts

BENTON, Arkansas — Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, the co-founder and CEO of the beloved travel center chain Buc-ee’s, has signaled a strategic pivot in the company’s growth plans. During the grand opening of the company’s first Arkansas location in Benton on August 17, Aplin indicated that the brand intends to move away from expansion efforts in “blue” districts, favoring states that offer more business-friendly and family-oriented environments.

Known for its massive footprint—often spanning 74,000 square feet with over 100 fueling stations—and a reputation for impeccably clean restrooms and high-quality food, Buc-ee’s has become a cultural phenomenon. However, as the company looks toward its future, Aplin suggested that the ease of doing business will be a primary factor in where they plant their flag.

“We have a lot of opportunities. We’re growing. We’re building in a lot of places,” Aplin told attendees at the Benton event. “But when you find a conservative business-friendly state with a phenomenal workforce, it makes a difference.”

The CEO was candid regarding his frustration with regions that are less receptive to the company’s arrival. “I’m starting to realize life’s too short to try to build in places that people don’t appreciate what you’re bringing, versus a place like this where people do appreciate what you are building,” he remarked, praising the city of Benton for its welcoming, business-centric approach.

Aplin emphasized that the company’s long-term success relies on a synergy between their corporate model and local government values. He noted that the “conservative, business-friendly, family-oriented” ethos works best when supported by leadership from the top down—spanning from governor’s offices to local mayoral administrations.

This latest statement highlights a clear Buc-ee’s expansion shift that leans into the company’s roots. Since its founding in 1982, the chain has grown to 58 locations, with the vast majority situated in conservative-leaning areas across Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and other states in the South and Midwest. While some existing locations reside in politically mixed zones, the company’s current development pipeline remains firmly centered on states that prioritize growth and commerce.

Looking ahead, the company shows no signs of slowing down. A new location is slated for Murfreesboro, Tennessee, this November, followed by a robust expansion schedule for 2027 that includes sites in Kansas City, Kansas; St. Lucie, Florida; and Ruston, Louisiana. Furthermore, the company has confirmed plans to enter North Carolina in 2028 with a new facility in Mebane.

As Buc-ee’s continues its rapid national ascent, Aplin’s comments serve as a clear indicator to developers and municipalities: the chain is seeking partners who align with its corporate values, and it is more than willing to bypass markets that do not share its vision of growth and economic development.
