Apple Upgrades Desktop Lineup with High-Performance M6 Mac Mini and M5 Mac Studio

Apple has officially refreshed its compact desktop lineup, announcing a significant performance leap for its hardware ecosystem. The company unveiled a brand-new Mac Mini powered by its latest silicon iteration, the M6, alongside high-end updates to the Mac Studio workstation.

The New Mac Mini: AI-Driven Performance

The latest iteration of the Mac Mini represents a substantial hardware overhaul. Apple claims the device offers 4x better AI performance compared to the previous M4 model, with graphics and storage speeds doubling.

Under the hood, the M6 processor features a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, an improvement over the 10-core configurations found in the M4 series. For users seeking even more power, Apple is also introducing an M5 Pro variant, which starts with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, with upgrade options reaching up to 18 cores and 20 cores, respectively.

Key pricing and configuration details:

  • M6 Model: Starts at $899, featuring 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
  • M5 Pro Model: Starts at $1,699, featuring 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Both models come equipped with next-generation connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support. While both ship with a 2.5GB Ethernet port, professional users have the option to upgrade to a 10GB port.

Catering to the Local AI Movement

The Mac Mini has seen a surge in popularity among tech enthusiasts over the past year, becoming the preferred hardware for running local AI agents like OpenClaw and Hermes. This trend even led to significant supply constraints and price markups on secondary markets like eBay earlier this year. With the introduction of the M6 chip and its enhanced neural capabilities, Apple appears to be leaning further into this demographic.

The new machines will ship with macOS 27 and the integration of Siri AI, further signaling Apple’s commitment to on-device intelligence.

High-End Power with the New Mac Studio

For power users requiring workstation-grade performance, Apple has also refreshed the Mac Studio series:

  • M5 Max Model: Starting at $2,499, this unit includes 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage.
  • M5 Ultra Model: Starting at $5,499, this flagship machine comes standard with 96GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage.

Availability

These updates come as part of a broader pricing strategy shift. Earlier this year, Apple discontinued its $599 entry-level Mac Mini model, transitioning its base offering to the $799 M4 version. The new $899 M6 model now sets a higher, albeit more powerful, starting point for the entry-level desktop.

Preorders are currently open, with the first units scheduled to begin shipping to customers on September 22.
