A Legend Returns: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Receives Massive Remaster and New Expansion
More than a decade after it first redefined the open-world RPG genre, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is preparing to make its most significant return to date. During the high-energy Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, it was announced that Geralt of Rivia’s iconic journey is being overhauled for modern hardware, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered set to launch on Xbox Series X|S on September 29.
A Modern Transformation
The Remastered edition is designed to bridge the gap between the game’s classic status and current-gen expectations. Visually, players can expect a complete modernization of the Continent. From the intricate textures on monsters and NPCs to a fully reworked lighting engine, the world promises to feel more vivid than ever. Enhanced ray tracing and natural light-and-shadow dynamics mean that whether you are roaming the wilderness or navigating the bustling markets of Novigrad at sunset, the world will feel entirely fresh.
Beyond the visuals, the developer has focused heavily on “feel.” Combat has been refined with smoother, more precise animations, allowing Geralt to close gaps during skirmishes with fluid grace. The addition of brutal new finishers—including an Aard-based takedown—and a dynamic, adaptive camera system ensures that players remain immersed in the heat of battle, whether they are fighting a solitary beast or a mob of bandits.
Rewriting the Path
Perhaps the most fundamental change lies in the game’s RPG mechanics. The character progression system has been entirely reimagined to meet modern expectations, featuring a redesigned skill tree, new perks, and reworked abilities. This, combined with new quality-of-life additions like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, which brings transmogrification, cross-platform mod support, and an expanded photo mode, ensures that players can truly make their Geralt unique.
For existing fans, the upgrade is incredibly generous: Remastered will be a free update for current owners of the game on Xbox Series X|S. Furthermore, those who own only the base game will receive the acclaimed Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions at no extra cost.
Looking Ahead: Songs of the Past
The excitement doesn’t end with the remaster. The developers also unveiled Songs of the Past, a brand-new expansion arriving in 2027. The narrative will transport players to Letten, the homeland of Dandelion, where Geralt accompanies his friend on a personal quest.
What begins as a seemingly peaceful excursion will quickly spiral into a dark mystery, as the region hides a sinister secret that only a Witcher can uncover. The expansion promises new, unseen monsters and a tactical shake-up for players: Geralt will gain access to new mutagens and a specialized chain weapon—a direct nod to the cinematic roots of the original Witcher game—to help manage crowds during combat.
With the Remastered launch just around the corner and a new chapter on the horizon, there has never been a better time to pick up your silver sword and return to the Path. Songs of the Past is available to wishlist now on Xbox Series X|S.
