Community Hub at Breaking Point: Faifley Pavilion Plagued by Vandalism and Construction Delays

A vital community project in Faifley is facing an existential threat as a wave of vandalism, theft, and persistent construction delays push volunteers to their breaking point.

The Knowes Football Pavilion, intended to serve as a beacon of support for the local community, has become a frequent target for antisocial behaviour. On Thursday, August 13, volunteers reported two local youths climbing on the pavilion roof, subjecting staff to a torrent of verbal abuse, threats, and intimidation.

Tony Ercoli, the Project Coordinator for the charity Flourishing Faifley, says the situation has deteriorated significantly over the last six months. What began as minor graffiti and structural damage has escalated into criminal activity. Most recently, between August 15 and August 21, perpetrators used bolt cutters to breach the building’s security shutters, stealing essential copper piping from the heating and water systems.

A “Lifeline” Under Threat

The charity’s plans for the pavilion are ambitious, aiming to tackle social isolation and poor mental health by providing youth clubs, a community gym, boxing classes, and gaming workshops.

“99.9% of the community is absolutely behind us,” Mr. Ercoli said. “It’s going to be an absolute lifeline for loads of families, but we are at a worrying point where we have to ask: will there even be a building left for us to renovate?”

The financial burden of constant repairs is beginning to drain the funds earmarked for the wider transformation project, leaving the group feeling “frustrated, disappointed, and exhausted.”

Finger-Pointing Over Delays

The charity is currently awaiting the commencement of refurbishment works by contractors Hub West and Morrison Construction. According to Mr. Ercoli, the project has suffered repeated delays, with the site sitting derelict for two years.

“If Morrison Construction and Hub West had got their finger out and delivered what they said they were going to deliver, we would have been operating for over a year,” he argued. “These kids would have had access to the resources that would stop this kind of trouble.”

Adding to the pressure is the potential loss of a £100,000 “Pride and Place” grant. Because the funds are tied to immediate-impact requirements, the project faces a strict April deadline. If initial works are not completed by then, the group could lose the funding entirely, jeopardising the entire future of the site.

Community and Political Backing

The plight of the volunteers has sparked outrage among local representatives. Councillor William Rooney expressed his support for the group, stating, “I am absolutely disgusted to hear the abuse the volunteers have received,” and confirmed he would be raising the issue with the local police Chief Inspector.

MP Douglas McAllister also condemned the “mindless thuggery,” affirming his commitment to the project. “My heart goes out to all the volunteers… you don’t deserve this,” he added.

In response to the surge in criminal activity, Flourishing Faifley has announced a zero-tolerance policy, confirming that all future incidents will be reported to the police. The group is now calling on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around the Langside Street site to help protect the future of the community hub.

Morrison Construction declined to comment when approached, while efforts to reach Hub West and Police Scotland for further information remain ongoing.
