The 33-year-old Argentine international is expected to travel to London imminently to undergo a medical examination ahead of finalizing the move to Stamford Bridge.
The transfer follows mounting pressure on current first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Despite having the club’s full backing since 2023, Sanchez’s position came under scrutiny after a shaky performance during Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Fulham on Monday. The keeper allowed a Josh King effort to slip through his hands at the near post and later spilled a shot that resulted in a goal for Gonzalo Garcia.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly identified the goalkeeping position as a top priority for reinforcement immediately following that match, triggering the rapid negotiations for Martinez. The Argentine shot-stopper had found himself surplus to requirements at Aston Villa following their £30 million acquisition of Japanese international Zion Suzuki from Parma. Martinez is expected to pen a two-year deal with Chelsea, featuring an option for a further year.
