Aamir Khan Reveals He Feared ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ Would Fail During Transition to Hindi
MUMBAI – The magic of Dil Chahta Hai was revisited in a star-studded reunion held in Mumbai on August 28, marking 25 years of the landmark film that redefined urban Indian cinema. The event, hosted by Amazon Music and We Are Yuva, brought together the creative forces behind the cult classic, including Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sonali Kulkarni, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Javed Akhtar, and the musical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
While the reunion was a celebration of nostalgia, Aamir Khan offered a surprising behind-the-scenes revelation regarding the film’s development. The actor disclosed that the original screenplay for the movie was penned entirely in English, a decision that left him skeptical about its potential success in Hindi.
The Challenge of Translation
“When I heard the script for the first time, I just loved it,” Aamir shared during the event. “Farhan had narrated it to me, but he had written the entire script in English. Because of the milieu and the backdrop of these characters, it was quite natural that they were speaking in English.”
However, Aamir remained doubtful when Farhan Akhtar announced his intention to film the project in Hindi. “I told him, ‘I don’t know how you would translate this flavour, which you are getting in English,'” the actor recalled. He noted that English is a highly economical language, and he feared that the film’s unique, breezy, and modern “coolness” would be lost in translation.
A Surprising Realization
Aamir admitted that he was genuinely anxious about hearing the rewritten scenes. “I was so sure that it’s very difficult to translate that English into Hindi,” he confessed. “I was pretty sure that when I hear the Hindi version, I am going to cringe.”
To the delight of fans and the team alike, the result defied his expectations. When he finally heard the Hindi draft, Aamir was “blown away” by the transition. This experience proved to be a turning point in his perception of the language.
“That’s when I realized even more sharply that the emotion you are feeling, you can convey that ‘coolness’ in any language,” said Aamir. “We often assume that English is a ‘cooler’ language, but no—Hindi is just as cool. You just need to know how to use it.”
