India and Uzbekistan Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership During High-Level Visit
TASHKENT – In a move signaling a historic shift in bilateral relations, India and Uzbekistan have officially elevated their diplomatic ties to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.” The announcement came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent for a high-level state visit, marking a new chapter in cooperation between the two nations.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi extended his warm congratulations to the President of Uzbekistan on the occasion of Independence Day, wishing the Uzbek people continued peace and prosperity. The dialogue between the two leaders focused on building upon a period of unprecedented growth in bilateral engagement.
A Surge in Economic Cooperation
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the rapid trajectory of their economic relationship. In a landmark achievement, bilateral trade surpassed the $1 billion threshold last year, while the number of joint ventures has multiplied sevenfold in recent years. Connectivity has also reached new heights, with fourteen direct flights now operating weekly between the two nations.
Looking toward the future, the two countries have set an ambitious goal to reach a trade turnover of $5 billion by 2030. To facilitate this, the leaders identified key growth sectors, including energy, metallurgy, electrical engineering, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals. New roadmaps are being developed to streamline these investments, with specific mechanisms and timelines to ensure project implementation.
Deepening Cultural and Educational Bonds
Beyond economics, the visit underscored a shared commitment to cultural and humanitarian exchange. Education remains a cornerstone of this partnership, with four Indian universities currently operating within Uzbekistan.
Cultural ties are further bolstered by the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Indian Culture and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Indian Studies. Furthermore, the growing popularity of yoga in Uzbekistan was highlighted as a testament to the deepening people-to-people connections. To solidify these bonds, the two nations are set to sign a five-year Cultural Exchange Program, which will include regular festivals, exhibitions, and forums.
Strengthening Regional and Global Coordination
The summit also facilitated a deep dive into international and regional agendas. The leaders reaffirmed the importance of mutual support within the framework of the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and BRICS.
To ensure the sustainability of this upgraded partnership, the two governments agreed to:
- Establish a coordination mechanism between their Foreign Ministers.
- Intensify exchanges through parliamentary friendship groups, the Intergovernmental Commission, and the Business Council.
- Foster interregional partnerships, such as those already thriving between the Andijan region and Gujarat, Fergana and Haryana, and Samarkand and Agra.
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi and the President of Uzbekistan instructed their respective ministries to move expeditiously on the agreed-upon projects. By implementing structured, sector-specific roadmaps, both nations aim to ensure that this “new chapter” in their history translates into tangible progress for their citizens, cementing a foundation for decades of cooperation to come.
