Fabio Quartararo Reaches Breaking Point: Refuses Further Development Duties at Yamaha
The strained relationship between 2021 MotoGP world champion Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha has reached a new low, with the Frenchman declaring that he will no longer assist the Japanese manufacturer in its development programs.
The decision follows a frustrating weekend at the Aragon Grand Prix, where the 25-year-old felt his race weekend was compromised by an excessive workload centered on testing new components that ultimately yielded little to no performance gains.
A Frustrated Figure
Quartararo’s patience has been tested throughout a difficult 2024 campaign. Having spent the first half of the season laboring with an underpowered bike—all while Yamaha attempts to overhaul its V4 engine project ahead of the 2027 technical regulation shift—the rider has finally decided to draw a line in the sand.
“As far as the future is concerned, I’m not in a position to help. And for personal reasons, I don’t want to help,” Quartararo stated. “We’re trying to make progress this year, but ultimately, if things don’t improve, there’s not much we can do.”
The “personal reasons” to which he refers are deeply rooted in a lack of transparency and opportunity from the Yamaha hierarchy. Quartararo confirmed that he had requested to participate in the upcoming September test at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, which would have allowed him to sample Pirelli’s new 2027 tire compounds. His request was flatly denied by the team.
The Pirelli Roadblock
For the grid’s riders, gaining experience with the new rubber is paramount, as the transition from Michelin to Pirelli is expected to alter the handling characteristics of the bikes significantly. However, manufacturers are notoriously protective of their departing talent. Yamaha, fearing that their outgoing star might share proprietary technical secrets regarding their new 850cc package with his future employers at Honda, has opted to exclude him from these vital sessions.
This stance stands in stark contrast to the approach taken by other factory teams. Honda has allowed its current riders, Luca Marini and Joan Mir, to test its 2027 prototype with Pirelli tires, and KTM has permitted Pedro Acosta to spearhead its development efforts despite his impending move to the factory Ducati team next season.
An Aragon “Test”
The tension boiled over at Aragon, where Yamaha tasked the 2021 champion with evaluating a new chassis and a updated linkage system. The results were underwhelming.
“It’s worse. On Friday, I said it was worse. They wanted to compare again this morning. It was worse,” a visibly frustrated Quartararo told media. “I was more of a test rider this weekend. Testing three different chassis, but it was not working. I’m not going to push myself to the limit and act as a test rider like I did this weekend.”
As he prepares for his departure from the team he has represented for eight seasons, it is clear that Fabio Quartararo refuses to be Yamaha test rider any longer. With his focus now squarely on finishing his tenure before switching to Honda, the former champion is unwilling to sacrifice his racing results for a development project that he will not be a part of in the future.
