Vandals Leave Cornwall Youth Brass Band in State of “Devastation” After Break-In
A cherished youth music organization is reeling after its rehearsal facility in Tuckingmill, Cornwall, was subjected to a targeted act of vandalism over the bank holiday weekend.
The Camborne Youth Brass Band, a cornerstone of the local musical community, was left in ruins after intruders forced their way into the building, leaving behind a scene of destruction that has shocked its leadership and members alike.
Musical Director Alan Pope described the scene as “devastating,” noting that the group’s rehearsal space had been systematically trashed. According to reports, the perpetrators went beyond simple theft, deliberately damaging irreplaceable equipment and historic memorabilia.
“There was devastation everywhere,” Pope told BBC Cornwall. “Equipment and music scores were thrown from the stage. Then, they discharged fire extinguishers over everything, leaving the entire facility and our instruments soaking wet. So much equipment has been smashed and broken.”
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they were alerted to the incident at approximately 18:00 BST on Saturday. Officers arrived at the Tuckingmill site to find that entry had been forced and “considerable damage” had been inflicted upon the structure of the building and the band’s inventory.
In a swift response, police detained five children—three girls and two boys, all aged 12—at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the vandalism is ongoing.
For the members of the Camborne Youth Brass Band, the recovery process will be a difficult one. Beyond the financial cost of replacing specialized musical instruments and damaged technology, the loss of music scores and items of historical significance to the band represents a blow to the group’s heritage.
The community is now rallying to support the young musicians as they attempt to salvage what remains of their rehearsal space and look toward the future. Updates on the police investigation are expected as the inquiry continues.
