Mumbai Appoints Siddhesh Lad as Captain for 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Season
Mumbai: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially announced a leadership change for the upcoming domestic campaign. Seasoned batter Siddhesh Lad has been named the captain of the 42-time Ranji Trophy champions for the 2026-27 season, taking over the mantle from star all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
The decision, confirmed by the Mumbai senior selection committee chairman, Rajesh Pawar, marks the second consecutive season that the team will see a change in leadership. The move comes as part of a strategic effort to balance player workload with long-term performance objectives.
Managing Workload for Shardul Thakur
Pawar emphasized that the decision to transition the captaincy away from Shardul Thakur was rooted in the need for effective workload management. As a key pace-bowling all-rounder, Thakur’s physical output is substantial, and the selectors are keen to ensure he remains at peak fitness for the rigors of the long domestic season.
“Shardul is our match-winner,” Pawar told reporters on Monday. “There is already too much workload on him, as he is expected to bowl a lot of overs, take wickets, and contribute with the bat. We don’t want to burden him with the responsibility of captaincy. With 10 games in the Ranji Trophy, he may need to rest for the odd match, and we want to ensure he is managed properly.”
A Reward for Consistency
Siddhesh Lad’s appointment serves as a direct reward for his prolific form during the 2025-26 season. The 34-year-old was a standout performer for Mumbai, tallying 774 runs across eight matches at an impressive average of 77.40. His campaign included five centuries, cementing his position as the team’s leading run-scorer.
Throughout his extensive first-class career, Lad has proven himself to be a pillar of the Mumbai batting lineup, accumulating 5,623 runs in 82 matches with 15 centuries and 30 half-centuries.
Looking Ahead
According to the selection committee, the transition has been handled with full transparency, with both Lad and Thakur consulted prior to the announcement. “We’ve spoken to both Siddhesh and Shardul about it, and both are positive,” Pawar noted.
The early announcement is intended to provide stability, as Mumbai looks to hit the ground running with their season opener against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium, scheduled for October 11–14.
Mumbai has been placed in a competitive Elite Group D, featuring the likes of Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Rajasthan. As the team prepares for the new challenge, fans and selectors alike will be eager to see if the leadership of the experienced Lad can steer the side back to title glory, building on the success seen under previous captains.
The formal transition marks a new chapter for the domestic giants as they continue to refine their squad dynamics. You can find more details on this development in the official Siddhesh Lad to replace Shardul Thakur report.
