India’s Economy Shows Remarkable Resilience with 7.8% Growth; PM Modi Calls for ‘Atmanirbhar’ Pivot

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded India’s latest economic performance, marking a significant milestone as the country recorded a robust 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter. Amidst a turbulent global landscape characterized by ongoing geopolitical conflicts and supply chain volatility, the Prime Minister described the growth figure as a “herculean feat” and a testament to the collective strength of the nation.

Speaking from Kyrgyzstan, PM Modi shared his optimism via an Instagram message on Tuesday, celebrating the hard work and resolve of the Indian populace. “The world is drowned in war. There is news of war all around. The world is surrounded by crises… Despite that, India is progressing at a fast pace,” the Prime Minister noted, highlighting that the nation’s economic momentum remains insulated from the instability plaguing other parts of the world.

A Renewed Call for Swadeshi

Building on this momentum, the Prime Minister used the occasion to reinforce his vision for an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat. He issued a fresh appeal to citizens to embrace the spirit of Swadeshi (local) in their daily lives, suggesting that limiting dependence on foreign markets is essential for long-term national prosperity.

In a candid address, PM Modi urged citizens to reconsider their consumption habits, specifically targeting luxury trends that impact foreign exchange reserves. He explicitly advised the public to avoid unnecessary overseas travel and to pivot away from hosting destination weddings in foreign countries. Instead, he championed the mantra of “Wed in India,” encouraging families to invest in domestic tourism and services to bolster the local economy.

Furthermore, he cautioned against non-essential purchases of gold, a commodity that has historically placed pressure on India’s current account balance. By prioritizing local goods and services, the Prime Minister argued, India could better insulate itself from war-related shocks and global economic uncertainty.

Building a ‘Viksit Bharat’

The Prime Minister’s remarks align with a strategy he has emphasized throughout the year, particularly since May, when he first called for collective participation to navigate global headwinds. By urging citizens to opt for public transport, electric vehicles, and “Made in India” products, the government aims to reduce the country’s vulnerability to external price fluctuations.

“If we continue to emphasise self-reliance, I have full faith that when we reach 100 years of independence, we will hand over a developed India to our youth,” PM Modi stated.

As the country looks toward the future, the government remains confident that its clear policy direction and the united resolve of its 140 crore citizens will continue to propel India to new heights. The Prime Minister’s call to action is clear: by fostering a culture of internal strength and self-sufficiency, India is well-positioned to transform its current economic growth into the foundation for a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
