“That Was a Fun Phone Call”: Shailene Woodley Reflects on Being Cut from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

It is a scenario every actor fears: pouring months of work into a high-profile production only to find out, long after the cameras have stopped rolling, that their performance has been left on the cutting room floor. For actress Shailene Woodley, this Hollywood nightmare became a reality with the 2014 blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In a recent appearance at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars actress opened up about the bittersweet experience of being cast as the iconic Mary Jane Watson, only to be excised from the final cut of the film.

A Dream Role Deferred

For Woodley, the role was more than just another acting gig; it was a childhood ambition. “I was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream,” she recalled during the discussion. “Spider-Man’s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, ‘This is so exciting!’”

The actress had fully prepared for the part, even filming three scenes alongside lead star Andrew Garfield. However, the excitement was short-lived. Woodley revealed that it took an entire year for the studio to inform her that her character would no longer be appearing in the film.

The Reasoning Behind the Cut

When the news finally came, the explanation provided by the production was centered on the film’s narrative bloat. “They were like, ‘So, you’re not in the movie anymore.’ I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’” Woodley recounted. The studio reportedly told her that they had introduced too many new characters and wanted to focus the story on the complex relationship between Peter Parker (Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).

The plan, according to the studio, was to introduce Mary Jane in a subsequent sequel, following the tragic death of Gwen Stacy. Of course, that third film never materialized, leaving Woodley’s version of the beloved comic book character to exist only in the archives of the production.

“Who Knows What the Truth Is?”

Despite the official explanation provided by the studio, Woodley remains humble—and perhaps a bit skeptical—about why she was really cut. “That’s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is?” she mused. “I could have been terrible, and they were like, ‘We can’t do this.’”

While Woodley never got her moment as MJ, the character eventually found its way into the modern cinematic zeitgeist through the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man trilogy, where the role is played by Zendaya alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
