Surrey Boost Relegation Fight with Signing of Indian Pacer Auqib Nabi

Surrey County Cricket Club have bolstered their squad ahead of a critical run-in to the season, announcing the signing of Indian seamer Auqib Nabi for their next three County Championship fixtures.

The 29-year-old arrives at the Kia Oval at a pivotal moment for the club. After securing three consecutive titles between 2022 and 2024 and finishing as runners-up in 2025, Surrey have endured a difficult campaign this summer. Having secured victory in just one of their opening 10 matches, they currently occupy eighth place in the Division One table, sitting a precarious three points above the relegation zone.

Nabi will be available for three crucial encounters, including home matches against Yorkshire and Glamorgan, as well as the away trip to face Sussex at Hove.

The fast bowler arrives in England in scintillating form. After representing India A earlier this summer, he was recently named in the senior India squad for their Test series against Sri Lanka. His stock has risen sharply following a dominant 2025-26 campaign in the Ranji Trophy; he was named player of the tournament after spearheading Jammu and Kashmir to their first-ever title, claiming a remarkable 60 wickets at an average of just over 12.5.

Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of men’s cricket, highlighted the physical demands of the current schedule as the primary driver behind the move.

“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run-in,” Stewart told the club’s website.
