Hampshire Cricket Retracts Signing of Scott Kuggeleijn Following Intense Fan Backlash

Hampshire Cricket has officially reversed its decision to field New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn, following a fierce wave of public outcry from the club’s supporter base. The decision comes just days after the county named the 34-year-old in their 15-man squad for the upcoming County Championship clash against Warwickshire.

The initial announcement, which appeared on social media platform X, was met with immediate and widespread condemnation. Supporters and critics alike labeled the move “shameful” and a “new low” for the organization, citing concerns regarding the player’s controversial history.

A Rapid U-Turn

Acknowledging the severity of the reaction, the club released a formal statement confirming that the move would not proceed.

“Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the Club,” the statement read. “We value the passion of our fanbase and thank everyone who took the time to share their view. Our focus now turns to supporting the team through the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. We encourage everyone to unite behind the team as we enter a crucial stage of the campaign.”

The Shadow of a Controversial Past

The backlash stems from Kuggeleijn’s history in the New Zealand justice system. In 2015, he faced charges of sexual violation by rape and indecent assault. While he was ultimately acquitted following two separate trials—the first ending in a hung jury—the proceedings have haunted his professional career.

This is not the first time his presence on a cricket pitch has caused friction; in 2019, his inclusion in the New Zealand national squad was met with vocal protest from spectators at Eden Park, who held up signs questioning his selection.

Survival Mode in the County Championship

The failed signing comes at a particularly fraught time for the county. Hampshire is currently languishing at the bottom of the 2026 Rothesay County Championship Division One table. With only 86 points from 10 matches, Ben Brown’s side is in desperate need of a turnaround to avoid relegation.

Sitting 16 points behind ninth-placed Leicestershire and 19 points away from safety, Hampshire’s margin for error is razor-thin. Following a rain-affected draw against Glamorgan, the pressure is mounting ahead of their next red-ball fixture at the Utilita Bowl. The club now faces the monumental task of securing their top-flight status while navigating the fallout from a personnel decision that brought them unwanted international scrutiny.
