From Pandemic Pivot to Culinary Acclaim: Stoke-on-Trent’s ‘Little Dumpling King’ Earns National Praise

What began as an uncertain venture during the depths of the coronavirus pandemic has blossomed into a local success story, as a Hanley-based chef finds his small restaurant immortalized in the latest work by one of Britain’s most formidable food critics.

Rob McIntyre, the owner of Little Dumpling King, says it is “pretty cool” to have his establishment featured in Nights Out In The Kitchen, the newest book from award-winning critic Jay Rayner. For a restaurant that started life out of necessity when McIntyre found himself struggling to secure work during the global lockdowns, the recognition represents a major milestone.

This is not the first time the Stoke-on-Trent venue has caught the eye of the legendary reviewer. Two years ago, Rayner featured the restaurant in a Guardian write-up, praising the eatery for its vibrant atmosphere and what he described as its “loose-limbed goofy approach to life.”

McIntyre admits that the ongoing support from such a prominent voice in the food industry has been transformative for his business. “It makes a massive difference,” McIntyre said. “If Mr. Rayner enjoys what we’re doing, then we must be doing something right.”

The journey of the Little Dumpling King serves as a testament to the resilience of local hospitality entrepreneurs who managed to navigate the economic volatility of the past few years. By leaning into a relaxed, authentic, and high-quality dining experience, McIntyre has managed to turn a survival strategy into a destination restaurant that continues to earn accolades on the national stage.
