The well-known radio star reportedly had his contract with the Beeb terminated over the weekend.
Scott Mills has been sacked by the BBC following an allegation about his personal conduct. Mills, 53, was pulled off air on his Radio 2 show last Tuesday, March 24, so the Beeb could probe the information.
Our sister title The Mirror has exclusively revealed that he has now been sacked. It is understood his contract was terminated over the weekend.
Mills, who earned between £355,000 and £359,999 annually for his work at the BBC, according to the 2024–2025 pay report, took over the flagship breakfast show from Zoe Ball last year. He had built up a loyal following after years on the Radio 1 airwaves. But he will no longer work for BBC radio after he was axed.
The BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”
Staff were said to be “shell-shocked” when informed of Mills’ sacking this morning, March 30. Lorna Clarke, Director of Music, confirmed the news in a statement to staff.
She said: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.
“Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity.”
She added: “Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too. I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything further now.”
Mills described the opportunity to take over from Zoe Ball as a “lifelong dream come true” and that he had been gearing up for it ever since starting in radio.
He said at the time: “It feels ever since recording my first shows as a kid for an audience of one, my mum, all roads since have led to this amazing opportunity. It really is a lifelong dream come true to follow in the footsteps of Sir Terry, Chris and Zoe to be the new presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.”
Mills kicked off life at the BBC almost 30 years ago, hosting the breakfast show on Radio 1 in the late 1990s. He would then go on to host weekend slots and an early evening show.
He later moved to Radio 2 and provided maternity cover for Sara Cox. When Cox did not return, the programme was renamed The Scott Mills Show.
