Norwich Airport Faces Major Disruptions as Air Traffic Control Staffing Crisis Leads to Closures

Passengers are being urged to check their flight status urgently as Norwich Airport implements a series of rolling closures today, Thursday, September 3, due to a perfect storm of staff illness and ongoing industrial action.

Travel plans for dozens of passengers were thrown into chaos this morning as the airport confirmed it would be forced to suspend all air traffic during three specific intervals throughout the day.

The airport, which serves as a vital hub for regional travel, issued an alert stating that it would remain closed to flights until 2:00 PM. Following this initial suspension, further windows of closure have been scheduled from 4:00 PM to 4:45 PM and again from 6:45 PM to 7:45 PM.

Industrial Action and Staff Sickness

The disruptions are the direct result of a combination of unforeseen Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff illness and a lack of flexible contingency cover, which has been severely restricted by ongoing industrial action.

Members of the Prospect union, representing critical air traffic staff, have been engaged in industrial action short of a strike since August 17. The dispute centers on a long-standing row regarding pay and working conditions. Airport management has confirmed that discussions are currently ongoing in an attempt to reach a resolution, but until then, the operational capacity of the facility remains severely hampered.

Impact on Travelers

The rolling closures have already caused immediate impact on commercial schedules. KLM has confirmed the cancellation of three services:

• KL1054: Norwich to Amsterdam
• KL1055: Amsterdam to Norwich
• KL1056: Norwich to Amsterdam

The airport has advised that KLM will contact affected passengers directly regarding rebooking options. However, with the situation remaining fluid, the airport has warned all travelers to exercise caution.

“Passengers should check with their airline for the latest information about their flight before travelling to the airport,” a spokesperson for the airport said. “We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience this may cause.”

As the facility works to manage the disruption, those with travel plans scheduled for later today are strongly advised to monitor their airline’s website and mobile applications for real-time updates.

Management maintains that they are doing everything possible to resolve the staffing crisis, but with the industrial action continuing, further short-notice adjustments to the flight schedule cannot be ruled out.
