Jasprit Bumrah Faces Crucial Fitness Assessment Ahead of Afghanistan T20Is

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team’s preparation for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan has entered a critical phase, with the fitness of strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah taking center stage. As the BCCI medical team conducts rigorous evaluations, national selectors have proactively identified Prince Yadav as a potential backup should the star pacer require more recovery time.

Assessing the Core Group

Bumrah is not the only player currently under the scanner at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). Joining him in a series of mandatory match simulation tests scheduled between September 4 and September 9 are Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana.

According to a BCCI source, while all four players have been deemed “clinically fit” by the medical staff, the team management is insisting on real-world testing. “The CoE has lined up these match simulations to ensure the players are truly match-ready. We are confident they will be available for the Afghanistan series, but we must be thorough,” the source noted. The Indian contingent is slated to assemble in Delhi on September 10 to finalize preparations.

Prince Yadav Emerges as a Key Prospect

In the event that further caution is required for Bumrah, the selectors are looking toward Prince Yadav. After making his international debut during the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June, Yadav’s momentum was briefly interrupted by a hamstring injury sustained during the second T20I in Zimbabwe on July 25.

Having successfully cleared his fitness assessments at the CoE, Yadav is officially back in contention. His consistent performances in T20Is following a strong showing in this year’s IPL have solidified his status as a serious prospect for the national side.

The Road to Red-Ball Cricket

Beyond the upcoming white-ball commitments, the BCCI and team management are mapping out a long-term strategy for Bumrah’s return to Test cricket. Having not played a red-ball match since the Guwahati Test against South Africa last November, the management is keen for the bowler to undergo a rigorous test of his knee’s durability.

“We need to ensure his knee can withstand the load of a first-class game before he steps onto the field for the Tests in New Zealand,” the source explained. Potential scenarios under consideration include having Bumrah feature in a Ranji Trophy fixture or an India ‘A’ match.

While the exact path back to the Test side is still being finalized—partly due to scheduling overlaps between India ‘A’ matches in New Zealand and the upcoming ODI series—it is expected that Bumrah will be rested for the home T20I series against the West Indies in October to prioritize his longevity in the longer format.
