Investigation Into Foreign Nationals Linked to Drone Attacks and Myanmar Insurgency

According to court filings approved by a Delhi court, these individuals are suspected of involvement in a drone attack on a civilian aircraft at Myitkyina airport in Myanmar’s Kachin state, which occurred on 20 February. The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has alleged that the group, while operating under the guise of tourists, utilized India as a transit point to facilitate unauthorized cross-border activities. The agency asserts that the group illegally entered the Indian border state of Mizoram before crossing into Myanmar to provide specialized training in drone warfare—including assembly, operation, and signal jamming—to ethnic militias opposing the local military junta.

The scope of the investigation has expanded beyond the initial arrests as the NIA seeks to uncover a larger international conspiracy. Court documents reveal that the accused had reportedly made at least two prior trips through Mizoram to conduct similar training sessions. Furthermore, investigators allege that the group was responsible for the illegal importation of significant quantities of drone hardware and components from Europe into Myanmar, routing these shipments through Indian territory. This logistical operation has raised serious alarm among authorities, as the training provided to these ethnic armed groups is believed to potentially support proscribed insurgent factions operating within India. By fostering these connections, the accused are alleged to have compromised national security and regional stability. Following the granting of permission by a Delhi court, the NIA is currently interrogating the detainees at Tihar Jail, using data extracted from seized digital devices, including videos, voice samples, and images, to corroborate the scope of the group’s activities.

This development occurs against the backdrop of an ongoing and volatile conflict in Myanmar, which has seen intense fighting between the military junta and various ethnic armed groups since the 2021 coup. The civil war has resulted in a staggering humanitarian toll, with estimates suggesting over 100,000 deaths. Despite the international condemnation surrounding the military-led government, security considerations along the shared border have necessitated continued diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and the leadership in Naypyidaw. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently hosted Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing for an official visit, highlighting the complex balancing act India maintains between regional strategic interests and the stabilization of its sensitive northeastern border regions.
