Fenix Museum Doubles Down: Record-Breaking Debut Sparks Ambitious Expansion

Rotterdam’s Fenix Museum Announces Major Expansion and Inaugural Exhibition

Rotterdam’s landmark migration museum, Fenix, has announced a significant expansion just over a year after its successful opening. Following a record-breaking inaugural year that welcomed over half a million visitors, the museum is set to unveil a new 650-square-metre gallery dedicated to major contemporary art exhibitions. This latest Breaking News highlights the institution’s rapid growth and its commitment to exploring the complex themes of migration through a diverse artistic lens. The new space is designed to host immersive installations that examine the social, cultural, and political nuances of human movement, further solidifying Fenix’s status as a premier global cultural destination.

The inaugural exhibition in this new gallery, titled Mouthfool, will open on November 19, 2026. This exhibition marks a major milestone for the Berlin-based art collective Slavs and Tatars, celebrating their 20-year career with a deep dive into the evolution of language as it traverses borders and cultures. Featuring an array of sculptures, textiles, and sound works, Mouthfool will also extend into the museum’s Plein—a central indoor city square—where the collective will debut Molla’s Reverse Ride, an interactive installation featuring custom race cars. This Breaking News confirms that the exhibition will run through May 9, 2027, offering a unique blend of humor and critical inquiry into how stories and traditions mutate during migration.

Director of Fenix, Anne Kremers, stated that the expansion represents a vital evolution for the museum’s artistic program. By providing a dedicated platform for contemporary perspectives, Fenix aims to deepen its engagement with the global narratives that define the migrant experience. As the museum builds on its initial success, this new gallery serves as a critical addition to its existing permanent collection, which includes All Directions, Family of Migrants, and The Suitcase Labyrinth. Visitors can anticipate a transformative experience when the space opens this autumn, marking a new chapter for one of the Netherlands’ most visited cultural sites.
